The 2021 vintage was close to ideal. Mother Nature was more than kind to us and there was much buoyancy in the air after a (seemingly) difficult year in 2020. Personally, this was a very easy vintage both physically and mentally; I feel that my decisions along the way were all close to perfect under all circumstances and I’m extremely happy with the wines.

For the first time since 2015, the rosé has been blended from two separate vineyards, both vineyards are very familiar and are both located in the “Upper” Yarra. The lion’s share (75%) of the blend is from the D’Aloisio vineyard in Seville (220m asl) and 25% of the blend is from the leased and self-farmed Silvan Reservoir Vineyard (290m asl). Both batches are the Syrah grape and were handpicked at moderate ripeness perfect for rosé, whole bunch pressed and wild fermented in old barriques. Nothing was added to the wine except for a small amount of sulphur dioxide prior to filtration and bottling.

100 Dozen bottles produced.

There are aromas of fresh strawberry, dried cranberry and stewed rhubarb. Underlying these aromas are spice, gunflint and white pepper notes.

The palate exhibits layers of red apple skin, strawberry gum and ruby grapefruit notes with soft and sweet tones of pink marshmallow and raspberry jam. These notes are woven into the lush mid-palate which then leads to a lovely long and crisp finish.

Best drunk in its youth, although the wine will also develop favourably over the next 2 years. A lovely vegan match would be Grilled polenta, blistered tomatoes and basil.

About Alkimi Wines

My wines are from my heart, and I put my energy and emotion into sculpting wines which I believe in. Many of my decisions are made on instinct and gut feelings where sometimes they are planned and sometimes are spontaneous.

My winemaking philosophy is to limit all techniques to what I classify as “basic principals”, where only fundamental (or traditional) techniques are used to make my wine. I favour natural acidity, wild yeasts and my wines are stabilised naturally only with the aid of Mother Nature.

I don’t use fining agents as I prefer to capture the natural characters of each variety to create unique personality and interest. I do believe that the best wines are the ones that show a distinct personality; personality of not just provenance, but the vintage conditions and the personality of the person/people who made them. My wines will always tell a story.

In 2017 I began farming my own vineyard which I see as an important step for a producer who is always focused on quality and technique. I strive in creating a healthy ecology below and above ground; where I have never used herbicides and I practice organic and sustainable techniques where and when possible.

Cheers, Stuart
