Phil Reedman- Master of Wine. Tasting note (below).

The Barossa Valley, quite rightly, trumpets its Shiraz wines to the world and generally leaves other regions to make the noise about Cabernet Sauvignon. Is this about to change I wonder?

Rare Black Cabernet Sauvignon is certainly raising the flag for Barossa Cabernet. The aroma is pure-play red capsicum; now there’s a varietal hallmark if ever there was one. The palate is medium-bodied with spicy, toasty French oak and coffee bean aromas and flavours.

Concentrated vermillion in colour, showing the concentration of low-yielding vines. An elegant, understated bouquet; youthfully varietal with cedary oak. “Power with Responsibility” best defines the palate. The colour might suggest a huge wine but this, while full-bodied, is dancingly elegant with vivid fruit and fine, structural tannins.

Given that I think this wine will live for 25 years it is a youthful now so please decant it early. Serve with Wagyu steak.

About Atze’s Corner Wines

Atze’s Corner is an artisan winery that uses several amazing vineyards to produce it’s wines. Handpicked grapes from family-owned vines around the Barossa Valley are the cornerstone of the business.

One of the most iconic ones are the Shiraz vines planted in 1912 and 1951, owned by Barb and John Kalleske, Andy’s parents. Other key vineyards they own are located at Koonunga and Ebenezer, iconic subregions of the Barossa renowned for its Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon wines.

Our ancestor moved to Australia from Eastern Prussia before settling in the Barossa Valley in 1843. They were skilled farmers who brought hope, years of expertise growing grapes and winemaking knowledge.

Over a century later, Andy Kalleske took this family passion to the next level. He founded Atze’s Corner Wines in 2005 backed by the rich history of his ancestry and deep appreciation for the winemaking process.
