Dark chocolate, snickers, dark berries, mint. Very Balgownie. Maybe a little forward this year, but also very classical. Brick dust, choc peanuts, almost a little leather, compact tannins. Never feels overcooked, just ripe and driven by powdery, ripe, natural tannins.

“Medium to deep ruby colour with subtle purple tints. A bouquet of briary cabernet fruit, rose petals and red fruits within, the palate firm on entry and tapering a little towards the finish. Acidity showing, but balanced. Slightly chewy tannins complete the aftertaste. This is a robust, strongly-structured cabernet in the style typical of region and maker. It demands time.”

A mix of fruit from 49- and 48-year-old vines (70/30), involving 30% whole berry under crushed fruit, fermented wild in open vats, with around 18 days of skin contact and aged for 18 months in 25% new oak. Balgownie is well known for its Cabernet Sauvignon, which is renowned for its cellarability. The 2018 shows great varietal character, with blackberry, plum and tomato leaf, as well as some spicy liquorice and vanilla from the oak, and the beginnings of tertiary complexity with earth, prune and chocolate.

The palate has a lovely mouthfeel, with very bright fruit giving it a fresh accent. The tannins are still pretty big and teeth-coating, but when consumed with food, they melt away, leaving a smooth, rich and fruit-centred core. I believe this should confidently age for at least another 10-15 years.

About Balgownie Wines

Balgownie wine quality starts with the care we take in our vineyards, balancing vegetative growth and moderate yields to produce healthy vines, vibrant fruit, and finished wines that showcase the character of our carefully chosen sites and vintages.

Balgownie was named after the shire of Balgownie in Aberdeen, Scotland where founder Stuart Anderson’s descendants originated. You may notice the township’s distinctive coat of arms on some of our labels.

Winemaker Stuart Anderson established Balgownie Estate’s Bendigo vineyards in 1969 with initial plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. From here Balgownie become an influential red wine producer in regional Victoria, producing rich savoury flavours with moderate alcohol and intelligent use of oak.

Balgownie Yarra Valley was purchased in 1999 by Des and Rod Forrester and Bill Freeman, who planted Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vineyards and then built accommodation, a restaurant, Cellar Door and Spa facility. Winemaker Tony Winspear developed the first Balgownie Yarra Valley vintages and looks after our legendary winery and vineyards to this day.
