Deep rubies and garnets, very bright in the glass. Quite a ripe and complex aromatic, lifted spices over light cherries and a backbone showing lighter French oak influences.

A briary blackberry front palate, leading to a spicy mid weighted palate showing freshening tannins and a bright acid balance. Nouveau style with traditional richness.

The 2021 Ben Murray Grenache is the product of an even and moderate growing and ripening season in what has now been seen as a year to produce perfumed and high-quality wines from the Barossa region. Ben Murray has sourced the Grenache for many years from Marananga Vineyards that are up to and over 100 years old. The vines produced ripe fruit from mid-March and the resulting wine is a classic expression of the popular Grenache style.

This is gorgeously fragrant on the nose with sweet plum, rich floral, thyme and warm spice aromas, followed by a succulent palate displaying plump mouthfeel combined with silky tannins, finishing persistent and expansive. At its best: now to 2034.
Sam Kim, Wine Orbit

If the Barossa had been settled by Burgundians, rather than originally being a home for fortified wines and dry Riesling, this is the type of expression of Grenache we might have seen over 100 years earlier – what many now call “warm-climate Burgundy”. Grenache as a single-expression, finally being taken seriously outside the miniscule enclave of Chateau Rayas in Northern Rhône.

Indeed, even in Grenache-dominant Spain, until recent decades, the vast majority of Grenache made rosé, not red wine. Anyway I digress. This is seriously delicious, world-class Grenache. Burgundian techniques resulting in a heady, alluring perfume leading to a vibrant, long, opulent but lithe palate. Hail-depleted yields, delivering ever greater concentration. Sublime now, this will be in its zenith in 5-10 years time. Great with duck and game dishes.

About Ben Murray Wines

In truth, Ben Murray is not one person, but two very passionate wine lovers who dreamed of one day crafting premium small-batch wines with elegance and texture.

Like all great partnerships, it started with a common interest.

For Dan Eggleton (middle name – Ben) and Craig Thompson (middle name – Murray), that interest happened to be a good drop of wine. As both Dan and Craig are originally Barossa boys, they have tasted a great wine or two… or three over the years!
