“Intense hit of smoke, clove and grilled meats. Amazingly complex with ripe blackberry and cherry, baked plum and anise, and a long, savoury finish. Very, very peppery. Decant. Very reduced at first, but nice leather and blackcurrant flavours come through with air. It’s full. inkv and broad with concentrated fruit. A big, opulent nose, oozing with meaty diesel perfume. Bold, dark berry flavours. One to keep and savour – it will benefit from another decade of ageing.

In the true expression of cool-climate Syrah, this wine exudes freshly cracked black pepper, crushed violets, red and black forest fruits and savoury smoky nuances. It has crunchy lifted acidity which carries the defined, fine-grain tannins and background of spicy, savoury oak.

This wine is about fragrance and texture, which is assisted by our pioneering co-fermentation technique with a small proportion of Gruner Veltliner skins as well as whole-cluster fermentation. The co-fermentation gives a white pepper spice quality to the flavour spectrum and intensifies and stabilises the brilliant purple hue of Syrah.

The result is layers of complexity in flavour and tannins which will allow an intriguing long-term ageing potential.

Our wines are 100% single-vineyard wines. They are small batch in nature and are a manifestation of the exact time and place they are from. We start with a blank canvas with every vineyard site and every vintage with the aim of reflecting individuality and character.

We also aren’t adorned with badges that stamp us as belonging to one regime or another. We would rather be free from such prescriptive and more often than not emotive raison d’etres that sees philosophy trumped over logic.
We embrace science (knowledge) and look forward rather than backward.

Our goal with Blank Canvas is to make wines that engage you, that challenge cerebrally and emotively. To do this we seek out exceptional single vineyard sites throughout Marlborough, Hawke’s Bay and Central Otago in New Zealand, grown by long-term grower partners that are dedicated to their land.
