Named for the coal seam which was mined during the goldrush and lies beneath the Carrick vineyards, the Excelsior is our finest expression of Pinot Noir. The wine is aged in barrel for 18 months, then bottled without fining. It is contemplative, complex, layered, earthy, intense and persistent.

About Carrick Wines

Carrick vineyard was planted in 1994 and takes its name from the Carrick Range which backdrops the property. The land was home only to a few merinos, rabbits, thyme and lichens. Today the vines are Certified Organic through Biogro NZ, and the business is Certified sustainable by Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand. Carrick’s vineyard, winery, and restaurant is situated on Cairnmuir Road in Bannockburn, a small subregion of Central Otago stretching along the southern side of the Kawarau River.

All of Carrick’s wines are produced from the 23.5 ha vineyard site surrounding the winery. The grapes are all hand-picked, certified organic, and made with 100% indigenous yeast with minimal winery additions.

In order to promote biodiversity and sustainability in the vineyard the team at Carrick have a native plant nursery for growing herbs and vegetables that are used proudly in the Carrick Restaurant. If you happen to wander through the vineyard you may stumble across the flock of chickens that roam freely and help to control grass grubs and plant vineyard cover crops, compost and organic material.

At Carrick it’s all about quality! The wines are pure, fresh and exciting examples of what Central Otago are well known for, Pinot Noir, Riesling and Chardonnay.
