Hints of Chamomile tea develop into freshly picked honeysuckle with baked brioche notes. Apricot kernels surrounded by flavours of pink grapefruit and lemon pith. Australian lemon myrtle expressions layer upon grounding flavours like crystallised ginger and poached quince.

This wine is a textural experience; it’s less about overwhelming you with explosions of fruit – more about exercising restraint and subtlety on the palate.

The complexity of Chenin. Floral earthiness to it, like paper daisies or a freshly brewed cup of chamomile tea with honey but it’s juxtaposed with citrusy pink grapefruit notes. A dance between two lovers, exercising restraint and subtlety.

Bit of time in the glass gives it more of a robust maturity– but still earthy fruit characters like quince or baked apples. It’s complex and layered and finishes delightfully fresh.

“This wine is epic. Strong aromas of green apple, floral things, faint vanilla and spice, whiffs of green herb. The palate is similar, good inward concentration, fantastic chalky-powdery characters, exceptionally long and fine feeling. So very beautiful this wine. Such wonderful personality.” Winefront

About Castagna Vineyard, Beechworth

The Castagna Vineyard is situated at an altitude of 500 metres five and a half kilometres outside the historic town of Beechworth in north-east Victoria, high in the foothills of the Australian Alps.

We make natural wines of terroir. Our intention is to make, as simply as possible, wine which is an expression of the place where it is grown. The wines of Castagna are multi-awarded and are at the forefront of the new Australia and are fully certified biodynamic.

Our soil mainly consists of decomposed granitic-loam with a predominance of quartz particles on a base of clay. Vines, through photosynthesis, convert air, light and heat from the ethereal into the material. Air, light heat – into – taste, colour aroma.
All estate-grown fruit is certified bio-dynamic
The vineyard is hand-pruned and the fruit is hand-picked

We crop at a little less than two tons per acre.

The winemaking is traditional using only indigenous yeast, and that, combined with minimal interference, is the key to achieving vitality and complexity.

Elevage varies between 18-20 months using only the very best, tight-grain French oak available.
