“Rose bright, lots of lively red berry fruitiness, some zesty, briny acidity in the mix, cool, tight bubbles. There’s some halva and nougat notes in the mix, a sense of complexity and freshness alongside savoury characters. Feels gently ‘red winey’ and has lots of detail and vitality despite that. Serious.” ~ Mike Bennie in Wine Front

“The wine has considerable weight. Like it seems heavy on the palate. Like some kind of burnished liquid gold. Then a cheeky, gentle, persistent fizz lifts that weight and turns the gravity off. Joy bounces off the top of your mouth, but the good feels go straight on up through the mixing deck. It’s magic.

Unlike most of these bottle-fermented sparkling wines, this one is neither cloudy nor explosive. But it gives more Sgt. Pepper’s Magical Mystery Tour per sip than nearly everything else I know.

Natural? Like that moody, more wintry Lobo, this wine is the work of methodical, respectful, natural-born genius with an acute scientific curiosity. Genius? Sure. If it wasn’t there’d be a helluva lot more of it.” Phillip White – Drinkster

About Castagna Vineyard, Beechworth

The Castagna Vineyard is situated at an altitude of 500 metres five and a half kilometres outside the historic town of Beechworth in north-east Victoria, high in the foothills of the Australian Alps.

We make natural wines of terroir. Our intention is to make, as simply as possible, wine which is an expression of the place where it is grown. The wines of Castagna are multi-awarded and are at the forefront of the new Australia and are fully certified biodynamic.

Our soil mainly consists of decomposed granitic-loam with a predominance of quartz particles on a base of clay. Vines, through photosynthesis, convert air, light and heat from the ethereal into the material. Air, light heat – into – taste, colour aroma.
All estate-grown fruit is certified bio-dynamic
The vineyard is hand-pruned and the fruit is hand-picked

We crop at a little less than two tons per acre.

The winemaking is traditional using only indigenous yeast, and that, combined with minimal interference, is the key to achieving vitality and complexity.

Elevage varies between 18-20 months using only the very best, tight-grain French oak available.
