THE { SEASON NOTES }
The 2020 was a very high-quality vintage, virtually every pick, throughout the entire region has been approximately 50 per cent down, with some varieties yield being down by 70 per cent. It really has caught all viticulturalists by surprise as by appearance the crops look generally on par with most other seasons. The real difference is in bunch and berry size – they are considerably small. On the upside of that – tiny berries equal lots of intensity and flavour. In sum, the 2020 fruit will make outstanding wines, but very little of them, making this vintage a very rare one.

THE { WINEMAKING }
Fruit was harvested in the cool of the night to prevent oxidation and retain flavour. Some post crushing, cold maceration skin contact was employed to increase flavour extraction. Only the free run fraction (530L/T) was used and fermented at 12-14 degrees C using a variety of yeasts to enhance the varietal expression.

The { TASTING NOTE }
In the glass the colour hints of pale straw. The aromatics are typical of the two great Riesling areas: Mt Barker region with a generous supply of lifted orange blossom and rose petals underlying crushed limes and white peach characters, whilst Frankland River contributes exciting grapefruit zest with hints of spice. These flavours are carried through onto a tightly wound palate that has a lovely lime/citrus like essence. As with most Great Southern Rieslings, this wine is lovely in its youth, however, for those with patience the reward from 6-8 years careful cellaring will be worth it.

About Castelli Estate

The Castelli name is rich with Italian heritage, beginning back in the quaint country village of San Giorgio a Liri, in Italy’s Lazio region – the birthplace of the Castelli family.

Predominantly a farming village, Sam grew up in a time and place where everything was grown off the land, and food and wine were local, handmade and bursting with flavour and tradition. In Italy, wines are made to share and enjoy. In Italy, we savour a glass with every meal and bring a bottle to every occasion.

Whether you are visiting our Urban Cellar Door in Perth, or taking in the sights and tastes of the idyllic Castelli Estate winery on the slopes of Mt Shadforth in Denmark, we invite you to share and enjoy our range of handcrafted, award-winning wines.

Putting his farming knowledge to use, Sam planted a small vineyard in his hometown and began making wine for their household in the traditional way; by hand from start to finish where the method of maceration is ‘grape-stomping’ – by foot. All local grape growers make their own wine for their household, and once a year in San Giorgio a Liri, there is a festival where locals buy a glass, hang it around their necks and spend the day visiting all the other growers to taste their homemade wines. With this as the backdrop to his early years, you could say that wine was in his blood…
