THE { SEASON NOTES }
The 2021 season posed some challenges with rain in early February followed by unseasonably cool temperatures delaying the start of the white harvest, although slowing everything down and allowing flavour to develop was the benefit in the end. The rain and cooler temperatures gave reds a much-needed drink, allowed colour to intensify and the following warmer finish allowed them to maximise flavour expression.

In the end, vintage 2021 started late, finished early and across the board quality very, very good!

THE { WINEMAKING }
Fruit was harvested in the cool of the night to prevent oxidation and retain flavour. The free run fraction (550L/T) and pressings were treated and fermented separately with the free run fermented at 12-14 degrees C and the pressings slightly warmer. All parcels were fined separately then blended according to taste.

The { TASTING NOTE }
Light pale straw in colour. The wine displays tropical aromas of passionfruit and honeydew melon with subtle herbal top notes and sprinkles of lemon sherbet. All of these flavours surround an intense herbaceous core. The palate is clean, generously flavoured: an elegant balance of acidity and fruit intensity with a lip smacking crisp finish. The flavour profile for this wine allows it to be enjoyed on its own or with a wide range of light aperitif or Asian dishes. Although this wine is best consumed while young and fresh, further complexity will develop over the next 3-5 years.

About Castelli Estate

The Castelli name is rich with Italian heritage, beginning back in the quaint country village of San Giorgio a Liri, in Italy’s Lazio region – the birthplace of the Castelli family.

Predominantly a farming village, Sam grew up in a time and place where everything was grown off the land, and food and wine were local, handmade and bursting with flavour and tradition. In Italy, wines are made to share and enjoy. In Italy, we savour a glass with every meal and bring a bottle to every occasion.

Whether you are visiting our Urban Cellar Door in Perth, or taking in the sights and tastes of the idyllic Castelli Estate winery on the slopes of Mt Shadforth in Denmark, we invite you to share and enjoy our range of handcrafted, award-winning wines.

Putting his farming knowledge to use, Sam planted a small vineyard in his hometown and began making wine for their household in the traditional way; by hand from start to finish where the method of maceration is ‘grape-stomping’ – by foot. All local grape growers make their own wine for their household, and once a year in San Giorgio a Liri, there is a festival where locals buy a glass, hang it around their necks and spend the day visiting all the other growers to taste their homemade wines. With this as the backdrop to his early years, you could say that wine was in his blood…
