The Bricco Boschis Cru is a truly profound vineyard; an amphitheatre-shaped site that produces this estate’s most emblematic Barolo. This comes from vines with an average age of 50 years, mostly situated in two parcels within this single vineyard. The first is the Punta Marcello, which lies at the top of the slope next to the cantina. This cool terroir is known for its fragrant, pale juice and long, angular tannins.

Then, there is the Vigna Colle Sudovest parcel, lying at a lower elevation and facing south. This is the warmest microclimate of the vineyard and so the fruit from these vines produces fleshier and more accessible wines, with darker, more richly flavoured juice and softer tannins. The renowned Vigna San Giuseppe vines also contribute something to the blend, and together these three components form a complete picture of the Cru; complementing each other and building aromatic and structural complexity into the final blend.

The 2018 saw between 25 and 35 days on skins, followed by three years in cask, ranging in size from 20 to 100 hectolitres. It was bottled unfiltered.

About Cavallotto Wines

The history of this hill begins with another name, that of Monte della Guardia. It was owned by Juliette Colbert, the last Marquise of Barolo , who hosted Silvio Pellico released from Austrian prisons, who created charitable institutions throughout Piedmont, who used a part of his Palazzo Barolo in Turin as an asylum for the children of workers and which, last but not least, created BAROLO as we know it today. Marquise Juliette left the hill to Giuseppe Boschis, who worked those vineyards. Since then that hill has been called Bricco Boschis.

In 1928 our great-grandfather Giacomo Cavallotto acquired the entire property , creating the Cavallotto Estate. From here on out it’s a family story. In 1946 Olivio and Gildo, under the watchful eye of their father Giuseppe and uncle Marcello, vinified their entire grape production for the first time. By creating the first bottles made exclusively with the grapes of this hill.

1948 was a turning point: the cellar was enlarged and the marketing of the first bottles of Barolo with the Cavallotto label began . We have to wait for the Barolo of the 1967 vintage to see the wording Bricco Boschis. Since 1970 Bricco Boschis has been better specified with the addition of the individual vineyards that make it up: Vigna San Giuseppe, Vigna Colle Sud-Ovest, Vigna Punta Marcello and the Barbera d’Alba Vigna Cuculo.

Today it is we – Alfio, Giuseppe and Laura – who lead the Cavallotto estate, respecting the tradition of this hill and of our family. Below Bricco Boschis we have created the aging department for noble wines, which joins the bottling room and the refinement room, born in 1994 and expanded in 2008. The story continues.
