About Château de La Chaize Wines

Château de La Chaize, one of the oldest and most historic estates in Burgundy’s Beaujolais region, was completed in 1676. Funded by Louis XIV’s chaplain, François de la Chaise, the chateau was named by his grateful nephew, the original owner. Renowned architect Jules Hardouin-Mansart designed the château, while André Le Nôtre crafted its gardens. Listed as a historical monument since 1972, the estate was cared for by the same family for nearly 350 years before passing to the Gruy family. The new owners are committed to both preserving its heritage and pursuing an ambitious environmental strategy, including converting the vineyards to organic farming, practicing precision viticulture, and striving for zero waste by recycling all by-products.

Although part of Burgundy, the estate’s vineyards, set on granitic schists, share more characteristics with the Northern Rhône than the limestone-rich soils of the Côte de Nuits. Beaujolais is the heartland of the Gamay grape, producing wines loved worldwide. These range from the light, fruity Beaujolais Nouveau to more structured wines from one of the ten Beaujolais crus located in the northern part of the region. The ten Beaujolais crus include St-Amour, Juliènas, Chénas, Moulin-à-Vent, Fleurie, Chiroubles, Morgon, Régnié, Brouilly, and Côte de Brouilly, each offering a unique expression of this iconic wine region.
