AT FIRST SIP-Blue plum, black cherry, and iron laced black peach. Distinctive blossom freshness and rosemary throughout the whole palate before easing into firm, springy ‘fruit coated’ tannins. Subtle oak influence hints throughout the palate adding delicate nutmeg like spice. Will certainly last gracefully for 10 years. AFTER A FEW-Surprising, delightful turns.

95pts Bob Campbell MW, 94 pts Cameron Douglas MS

10% whole bunches were used (a little less than the sister wine from the Black Rabbit vineyard), 25 days maceration before being transferred to 4 year old barrels. Natural malolactic went underway before being bottled unfined.

The Inlet Vineyard: ‘Situated on a river terrace above the Bannockburn Inlet. Planted 2002. The soils are loess ranging from 200—600mm on top of deep clay gravels, around 160,000 years old. On an elevation of 225—245m. 5.25 ha.”-James Dicey winegrower.

‘Dicey’ – defined as ‘Unpredictable and potentially risky’

James is the grower, Matt the caretaker. Two brothers, Two neighbours. Fierce about wine, family, and Bannockburn – the land where they have put down roots. Wine runs deep for the Diceys.

All fruit for Dicey is sourced from the family’s vineyards in the Bannockburn sub region of Central Otago. They are aiming for Biogro certification in 2022 (currently in conversion).

Description

Dicey Wines, Bannockburn, Central Otago

Wine is about place. Dicey is a place that is a rocky pocket of Central Otago: Bannockburn. It’s not easy to make wine here. Hoar frosts. Wind. Bitter cold and crackling heat. The land is unforgiving and the wines express that struggle.

The fruit comes from three vineyards started by three families transcending two generations. James and Odelle have The Inlet. Matt and Ali belong to Black Rabbit. Their pioneering parents, Robin and Margi, own their Swansong.

Our vineyards are named Swansong, Black Rabbit, and Inlet. Swansong is steep — the vines clawing their way along terraces of eroded gravel and clay. Black Rabbit sits on ancient bedrock, vines nestled into windblown soil. Inlet’s vines drape over a terrace of deep river gravel. We coax the best out of these reluctant soils by striving for balance.

Dicey Bannockburn wines pay homage. They tell the annual story of the region and share the colours of each season. The Single Vineyard wines have an even sharper focus.
