A discovery we have great faith in. Deep purple red, raspberry licorice and boysenberry aromas lead to a fleshy palate of choc-cherry, boysenberry and pomegranate.

Barossa Montepulciano, or ‘Monte’, is a discovery we have great faith in. With its Mediterranean origins, it has natural agility to perform well in warm, dry conditions. We see it as a ‘gen next’ Barossa variety that will sit comfortably alongside existing regional classics.

Our 2022 Montepulciano, grown across two sites in the Barossa, has a perfumed nose with aromas of fresh boysenberry, mulberry, black cherry, and violets. The dark and brooding fruit provides great structure and balance whilst finishing with bright acidity and ferrous-like tannin.

Vintage Notes
The 2022 growing season featured above average winter rains followed by a perfectly mild, fine, dry harvest period. Temperatures were milder than average with few hot days. Ripening was slow, enabling good retention of fine varietal flavours.

About Gibson Wines

Gibson Wines was established in 1996 and draws on over 45 years of experience of its founder; viticulturist, geologist and winemaker, Rob Gibson.

Surrounding an 1850s Blacksmith’s cottage, Gibson’s home property in Light Pass – Northern Barossa – features a 7 – acre patch of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. These vines are planted under the Gibson-Schulz trellis system, a unique method co-invented by Rob. The vines are alternately planted on a low and high cordon wire, the latter reaching nearly two metres in height.

Alongside these estate vineyards, relationships forged by Rob over four decades with multi-generational Barossa grape growing families, provides Gibson with enviable access to some of the region’s most precious fruit. Crossing all compass points of the region, Gibson’s grower relationships are key. Not only in providing a multitude of complexity in the end wines, but as a means of supporting a sustainable, integrated wine growing community.
