From a steep, terraced slope on the west side of Dürnstein and cultivated on paragneiss soils, the 2021 Ried Kaiserberg Dürnstein Grüner Veltliner Federspiel offers a coolish and spicy, pretty smoky and herbal bouquet of white-seed fruits. On the palate, this is an intense but also structured and piquant Veltliner with a long and complex, finely bitter finish. Excellent. This is a classic Grüner with a rather coolish and stony nature. 12.5% stated alcohol. Screw cap closure.

Domäne Wachau Grüner Veltliner Kaiserberg Federspiel comes from the grand-cru site “Kaiserberg” (the “emperor’s hill”). This was the ancient campground of emperor Charlemange who banished the Avars from the Wachau around 800 AD. The vineyard is situated west of Dürnstein. Wines from Kaiserberg are renowned for their superb overall balance and their classical mineral character.

The grapes for Grüner Veltliner Federspiel Kaiserberg were carefully hand-picked. Our modern grape reception system enables us to select only 100% healthy grape material. Short maceration, gentle pressing, overnight sedimentation, and temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel define the vinification process. Before bottling, the wine matured on the fine lees for several weeks.

Intense aromas including white flowers, subtle hints of stone fruit and smoky sweet spices as well as elegant tropical fruits. In the mouth it is a well-balanced, fresh wine with lively acidity, flavourful fruit and well-structured salty character causing it to linger on the palate. The name “Federspiel” is derived from falconry which was a very popular leisure time activity among the nobility in medieval times. The falcon stands for the remarkable elegance of these dry white wines. – Roman Horvath MW, Domäne Wachau

About Domäne Wachau

Domäne Wachau, led by Roman Horvath MW and Heinz Frischengruber, has developed into one of the top estates in Austria, with an excellent range of Wachau wines that beautifully reflect origin. The small vineyard plots in the steep terraces along the Danube river are cultivated by vintner families – the true heroes of the estate – through their intensive manual work.

Craftsmanship, sustainability, and the unique biodiversity are the pillars of the vineyards that Domäne Wachau manages. Many of these vineyards are world-famous, including Achleiten, Kellerberg and Singerriedel. The estate is also known for its extensive wine tourism offerings.

Accompany us as we explore the Baroque cellar vaults beneath Dürnstein’s Kellerschlössel, experiencing what makes the Wachau wine region so very unique. At the end of the tour, you sample the Wachau’s regional- and single vineyard wines (the Steinfeder, Federspiel and Smaragd categories) as well as local varietals – discovering what makes them distinct.
