This November we celebrate 40 years of Eastern Peake, quite the milestone, where did all this time go?!

With the upcoming celebrations, we thought it’d be super fun to dip into the back catalogue to grab some inspiration from past releases. The label you can see here takes inspiration from the 1996 Persuasion (rosé) label, Its hard to imagine now that in the early 1990s Dry, delicious, fresh textured rosé wasn’t all that popular. I’m glad my parents stuck to their guns & a paved the way for me to continue to produce a similar style to this day.

The fruit for this wine is grown by long term friends Frank & Kerry Walsh, directly over the road on the same soil type as Eastern Peake weathered basalt on grey loam. Frank first established with pinot noir in 1995 then a second 1 acre planting in 2003 with Syrah (Clone PT23).

Vintage 2022 was extremely challenging early on in the vineyard, a long cooler year meant the season ended up dragging on for the little block of syrah so a decision was made to Harvest on the 5th of may as the fruit wouldn’t survive any longer on the vine into the remaining autumn.

The Syrah was whole bunch pressed, fermented in large format Stockinger Austrian oak with indigenous yeasts, 11 months lees contact, racked, estate bottled. A small amount of sulphur post malo & pre bottling. No fining, filtering or Tinkering. Thoughtfully produced to reflect on where it was grown.

About Eastern Peake Wines

Eastern Peake is a leader in boutique wines, selling exclusively to restaurants and niche retailers nationally. With the brand new function/tasting room at the Vineyard, we welcome you to experience Eastern Peake wines in absolute surreal surroundings.

Eastern Peake Vineyards are set on a small plateau at Coghills Creek in the Ballarat Highlands some 25 km from Ballarat. A dramatic backdrop of a rugged granite outcrop of Mt Bolton, namely ‘Eastern Peake’ is to the west of the vineyard, creating the stunning view seen from the property. The east the vineyard overlooks the Mammaloid Hills of the Creswick Plains, named by Major Mitchell during his epic trail.

The Eastern Peake Vineyard was established in 1983, the first plantings being 8 acres of Pinot Noir followed by 4 acres of Chardonnay in 1991. In 1994 the decision was made to establish a winery and cellar door facility at Coghill’s Creek. The winery was completed in time for the 1995 vintage.

High Hopes Wine

High Hopes Wine Company is a wholesaler, importer and distributor of good drinks.

In 2011 a couple of guys, Ned Brooks and Joel Amos, each with a viticulturalist as a parent, bonded over a shared background in wine and a good feeling about where a niche of the wine industry was headed: the questioning of the status quo mass-produced big wines (or Big Wine) in favour of a more natural style of winemaking and grape-growing. Brooks & Amos was born, a small agency business. Many of the Australian producers we met and whose wine we loved were just starting out too.

Fast forward to today and Brooks & Amos has evolved into High Hopes Wine Company – now with Ned Brooks solely at the helm. The producers we work with remain some of the truest characters in the business. They’ve entrusted us with sharing their stories and ~ literally ~ the fruits of their labour and we’re proud to connect them with some of Australia’s best restaurants, bars and retailers.

Our product list is not encyclopaedic, ticking off one of each varietal or region. Nor is it dogmatically ‘natural’. Just a healthy respect for the grapes, the earth they’re grown from, and the craft of the vigneron. It’s what interests us, the things we want to drink.
