Durif is a little known variety made famous by neighbouring Rutherglen, but planted throughout North East Victoria. Super late ripening its painfully tight bunches make it a difficult variety to grow. The resultant wines are structured, jet black in colour with a remarkable depth of flavour. They are a safe bet to reward with careful cellaring, as young wines they are a great match with red meat.

Planted at our home vineyard in Eldorado, our vines were taken as cutting of the original Rutherglen clone kindly provided by Stanton & Killeen. Our site in Eldorado is a cooler site for Durif, this allows us to make a more restrained rendition of this usually powerhouse variety. To complement the finesse of the grapes from our home vineyard in Eldorado we also source a couple of tonnes of high quality Durif from a very well run established vineyard in Rutherglen. This fruit works perfectly in tandem with ours by giving the wine another level of complexity and flesh.

Grapes are tasted daily and picked at exactly the right moment when flavour and tannin are in balance. Upon arrival in the winery the fruit is destemmed but not crushed to maximise the presence of whole berries. 20% free run juice is run off, this gives the wine further concentration and intensity. We chase freshness and bright fruit never allowing our Durif to become overripe. The grapes are then split into multiple ferments which are cold soaked for 48 hours before inoculation with separate strains of cultured yeast. All ferments are kept cool and gently hand plunged once daily to limit extraction of harsh obtrusive tannin. Extended maceration is undertaken before gentle basket pressing to a combination of new and seasoned French Oak Puncheons, and barriques. Approximately 20% are new. 18 months in oak on full lees to build texture.

Serve at 18-20c, put in the fridge for 15 minutes before serving in summer. As all our wines are unfined and left to rest on gross lees to build texture in barrel, decanting the wine before serving will allow it to shine!

Food match: Braised Beef Cheek

Cellaring Potential: Time is your friend, store in a dark cool spot free from large daily temperature fluctuations. This wine will continue to improve and reward with cellaring of 15+ years.

Reviews

Fruit sourced from 3 different vineyards. All parcels fermented with cultured yeast, 13–21 days on skins, basked pressed to new & seasoned French puncheons & barriques (20% new). Matured 18 mths in oak on full lees. Durif re-imagined, courtesy of cool-climate elegance (Beechworth) mixed with a dose of generosity (Rutherglen) that needs to be tasted by every drinker who was ever scared witless by the grape. This is not scary, rather it’s brilliantly delivered as a serious wine of some beauty: aromatic, blueberry, plum, dark chocolate & spice all lifted, fresh & plush. Bravo. 96 Points – Wine Companion, May ‘22

About Eldorado Road

Eldorado Road was established in 2010 and specializes in red varieties, growing Durif and Nero d’Avola at our Eldorado Road vineyard taking full advantage of Eldorado’s magnificent soils and terrior.

Eldorado is located in the Beechworth foothills equidistant between Beechworth & Wangaratta. The tiny home vineyards are located on Eldorado Road a few kms from the quaint hamlet of Eldorado. The property was selected & purchased principally because it’s located on a seam of free draining red decomposed granite loaded with granite buckshot, flanked by granite hills & fed by the gentle flowing Reedy Creek which weaves its way through the property on its journey to the Ovens River.

We also lease a local Shiraz vineyard planted way back in 1890s and still farmed without irrigation producing small quantities of amazing fruit. This particular vineyard and wine truly reflects a unique piece of Australian winemaking heritage.

Paul Dahlenburg (Bear) & Lauretta Schulz (Laurie) spent a career making wine & tending to the vineyards of others, although in 2010 Eldorado Road was born & they had their own label.

“Shout it from the rooftops – Eldorado Road, as a label, should be much more famous. The wines are too interesting, too keen, too complex to be ‘just another Victorian producer’. Andrew Graham, Australian Wine Review.
