About Gallagher Wines

Gallagher Wines, is located at Jeir, (near Murrumbateman) and is run by Greg and Libby Gallagher. Recently their daughter, Lauren, has joined the team.

Over the last forty years Greg has been involved in premium wine production in Australia’s best wine regions. He was the Senior Winemaker for Taltarni and Clover Hill from 1978 to 1998 and the winemaker of the Charles Sturt University Winery from 1999 to 2004. He has also has made wine in the Barossa Valley, Coonawarra, Mildura and Rutherglen and Greg also has experience in France, the USA and New Zealand.

Greg has won many national and international awards for the wines he has made, including the LA Times award for “Best Cabernet”, the New York Wine Experience award for “Best International Red Wine”, and the Decanter (UK) award for the “Best Rhone and Rhone Style Wine”. Greg has also been awarded the trophies for Best Sparkling Wine in Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide.

After looking at the established quality areas for premium grape production in South Australia, Victoria and NSW, Greg and Libby Gallagher established a vineyard in Jeir (between Hall – Murrumbateman) area of the Canberra District in 1995. The quality of the fruit being produced and the unrecognised potential of the region convinced them that the future would see the Canberra District recognised for premium wine production.

In the 20 years Greg has been in the Canberra District he has won trophies for the Gallagher Shiraz (Best Shiraz, Best Dry Red and Champion Wine of Show), the Gallagher Blanc de Blancs (Best Sparkling Wine, Champion Wine of Show) and the Gallagher Riesling (Best Dry White).

The Gallagher Riesling has won the ‘Top Gold’ twice in the Canberra District Wine Shows and was rated by one of Australia’s top wine critics as amongst the best in Australia with a 96 point award for the 2011. The 2017 Riesling was awarded 4 Trophies, including Best In Show, in the International Riesling Challenge. The 2018 was also awarded Gold in the 2018 International Riesling Challenge as well as the top gold in the Australian Cool Climate Wine Show.
