Deep crimson with violet hue. Lifted aromas of violets, blackcurrants and blueberry fruits, come together with nuances of dark baking spice and hints of sage. The palate shows beautiful freshness with layers of blackcurrant and boysenberry fruit intertwined with hints of choc mint and blood plums. The finish is focused and dark, finishing with long and rolling grainy tannin.

A tin-roofed, mud and straw-walled cottage sits at the centre of Gibson’s home property in Light Pass. It was the original home of the local Blacksmith and his family, thought to date to the 1850s. An artefact of the Barossa’s early European settlers, we know it simply as ‘The Smithy’.

This wine, like The Smithy cottage itself, is full of character and unassuming charm. The quintessential Australian blend of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon comes together seamlessly. Lifted, blue and red forest fruit characters and violets meet a ‘deep growl’ from complex blackcurrant, blood plums and choc mint from cedary oak.

Vintage Notes

Early temperatures in October and November were below average giving slow development. Cool dry ripening conditions later combined with low yields led to good varietal expression in both Eden Valley and Barossa Valley. The tendency was for slightly lower alcohol wines and that show great balance and purity of fruit.

About Gibson Wines

Gibson Wines was established in 1996 and draws on over 45 years of experience of its founder; viticulturist, geologist and winemaker, Rob Gibson.

Surrounding an 1850s Blacksmith’s cottage, Gibson’s home property in Light Pass – Northern Barossa – features a 7 – acre patch of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. These vines are planted under the Gibson-Schulz trellis system, a unique method co-invented by Rob. The vines are alternately planted on a low and high cordon wire, the latter reaching nearly two metres in height.

Alongside these estate vineyards, relationships forged by Rob over four decades with multi-generational Barossa grape growing families, provides Gibson with enviable access to some of the region’s most precious fruit. Crossing all compass points of the region, Gibson’s grower relationships are key. Not only in providing a multitude of complexity in the end wines, but as a means of supporting a sustainable, integrated wine growing community.
