Langhorne Creek has always been a good region for Malbec with some exceptional wines coming from here over the years. This one is a beauty, displaying all those fruit red fruits across a wide spectrum of aromas and flavours. The oak and fruit balance is outstanding, and the fine chalky tannins fit snuggly into the mix. Oh, yes, I could be drinking a bit. 93 points. Ray Jordan, Wine Pilot

2018 Vintage: Steady winter rainfall and multiple flood events gave us a good storage of moisture and healthy vines leading into the growing season. Higher than average summer temperatures have offered up robust fruit characters. This yielded only a tiny crop of the capricious Malbec, but wonderful concentration.

One row of vines was isolated from our estate vines in Langhorne Creek. Only French oak was used to allow the Malbec fruit to have its full expression. Extended maceration helped to accentuate the depth of colour and aroma.

Only six barrels of this intense and pure Malbec were produced. The result is a wine of the most penetrating purple colour with flavours and aromas that reverberate this first sensation. Dense purple blueberry and juniper flavors are punctuated with aromas of lilac and wisteria. The undeniable concentration on the palate continues to a long and pleasing finish. Very reminiscent of our inaugural 2015 vintage.

Description

The Heartland story began in the late 1990’s when winemaker Ben Glaetzer became excited about the outstanding quality of fruit being grown in some of South Australia’s lesser-known regions, in particular Langhorne Creek.

Together with industry veterans, Scott Collett, Grant Tilbrook and more recently Nick Keukenmeester, they grew Heartland into an award-winning winery.

“A really important point I want to get across is we’re not a group of investors that have got together and poured cash into it for the sake of doing it. We are at the coalface of it.”

Today Heartland sources all of its fruit exclusively from Langhorne Creek and makes only red wines.

Heartland is the essence of Australia’s Langhorne Creek, a region that typifies Australian texture, balance and spice at its finest. Heartland grows and selects grapes with the most flavour per acre through careful vineyard management and years of collective expertise.

The brilliant Ben Glaetzer gives focus and expression to these flavours in the winery. Heartland is the place between the vines that offers the best view of the gum trees.
