Deep vibrant purple / red.

An elegant wine with tremendous levels of concentration and flavour ripe raspberries, dark red berries, warm cedar with a hint of vanilla and a spicy, peppery undertone.

A silky, glossy palate. Beautiful tannins with a delightful, silky, lingering finish.

The grapes are handpicked from dry grown, low yielding vines planted in 1905. Naturally fermented in open 500L vats, gently hand plunged each day. The wine is matured in new French oak Hogsheads for 24 months.

AWARDS/REVIEWS
Erin Larkin | Wine Advocate | September 2022 | 97 Points

“2020 was the second of two very warm, dry vintages in Barossa, and between the two years, I have found the 2020s to have more vitality and life than the 2019s at the same point. This assessment is up for discussion, but currently I prefer the 2020s. Here, the 2020 1905 Shiraz sits at 15.6% alcohol (2019 was labeled as 15.2%), but like its 2019 sibling, the fruit and spice in the mouth transcend the alcoholic warmth.

There is blood plum, raspberry compote, aniseed, salted licorice, black tea, juicy roast meat and bay/fennel/star anise, all of it shaped by savory, earthy/ferrous tannins and a skein of entrenched acidity through the finish. This is visceral—the mouth is stained with flavor and fruit, while the heart holds the memory of the flavors that have just been. This is a massive wine that speaks to the region and to the Eden Valley site. It’s not for everyone but is just so well executed. Drink 2022 – 2037.”

Description

About Hobbs of Barossa

Greg and Allison with their family Sean, Bridget and Jessica moved to the historic 15 acre vineyard in 1995, leaving behind a city life for a new life among the vines. Managing their vineyard with sustainable agricultural practices they make their premium quality wine by concentrating on preserving the complex balance of natural flavours of the grapes.

At Hobbs we have a strong belief in the balance of nature and strive to maintain this balance between nature and agriculture by embracing an organic and bio-dynamic approach to managing our vineyard. We hand-prune each vine and hand-pick the fruit.

Through careful hand-pruning over the years, we’ve been able to remove the dead wood from our old vines, re-establishing their original shape. The result is renewed vitality, and the potential for these vines to prosper over another century or more.

We’ve lifted the trellising in our vineyard to give the vine canopies greater expanse. Increased sunlight exposure and the flow-through of breeze helps minimise disease pressure, as well as enhancing fruit ripening and flavour profiles.

The unique soil structure at the Hobbs vineyard allows our old vines to be dry-grown. We will water only in extreme conditions to maintain the health of the vines.

Our cooler climate ensures long, mild ripening conditions, resulting in the typically characteristic flavour and acid balance of the fruit.
