The cabernet shape of the bottle is normal, its weight heavier – appropriate for Jack Mann’s belief that no wine was worth its gold unless it could be diluted with 50% water and still enjoyed. This is pure cabernet sauvignon, from a deep well of blackcurrant and black olive fruit, and tannins to make sure the wine outlives you.

97 Points – Huon Hooke The Real Review
Very deep, bright purple/red colour, with a concentrated cassis bouquet, fresh and youthful, with lifted aromatic notes suggesting blackberry, dried herbs, blueberry and a faint hint of peppermint, while the flavour is mouth-filling and concentrated in its intensity. Masses of fine, appropriately firm tannins coat the mouth, all components in harmony. A splendid cabernet that already shows complexity and promises to age superbly. One of the more elegant examples of this famous Houghton wine. Opens with delightful leafy notes on the nose that sit gently across the blackcurrant and black olive naunces. There’s a little bay leaf and tobacco thing happening in there too. Then the palate delivers with deep control, supported by a rigid spine of chalky tannin and fine-grained oak. Still very shy and it will be a few years before it has the courage to really strut its stuff.

Jancis Robinson in the Australian Classics Review on 7/1/2021
Not an exceptionally deep crimson. Complex, subtle, relaxed, layered nose. On paper this looks like a ridiculously early release for a wine with this track record and rated Outstanding in the famous Langton’s Classification. It really is a claret in style! So unlike the Australian stereotype. Rather subtler than most red bordeaux! Superappetising and admirably restrained. Dry but not drying finish. I’d love to compare this with a red bordeaux of the same age but they are not yet in bottle! It really opens out into a fan of flavour on the finish. The word classic springs to mind.

Our flagship wine, named after legendary Houghton Winemaker Jack Mann, who presided over winemaking for 51 consecutive vintages.

A fine wine of elegance, fruit flavor and power balanced by firm fine-grained tannins, Jack Mann is the finest Cabernet produced by Houghton. Accordingly, it is named after legendary Houghton winemaker, Jack Mann who presided over the winemaking for 51 consecutive vintages at Houghton. Jack’s unrelenting search for flavor and character and his desire to make wine to exacting standards was legendary within the industry.

This wine has a dark purple appearance with a bright scarlet hue. The bouquet is dense with concentrated dark forest fruits, black olive, blackberry and dark chocolate characters. There is a subtle overlay of dried herbs with high quality French oak completing the picture. The palate is full flavored with rich, sumptuously layered wine with intensity, power and presence. The dense, firm, fine grained tannin is beautifully integrated with the fruit and oak providing a seamless palate. A wine of exceptional concentration and length. This wine has Outstanding intensity, structure and balance ensuring the ability for long cellar life.

About Houghton Wines

Houghton is one of Australia’s oldest wineries, dating all the way back to 1836. Houghton wines is known for its colourful history including tales of pioneer Scots, bandits, and generations of winemaking craftsmanship.

Only four years after the fledgling town of Perth was established, three British Army officers (Thomas Yule, Ninian Lowis and Richmond Houghton) purchased a prime piece of land in the Swan Valley and established Houghton.

We captured the nation’s attention in 1937 when winemaker Jack Mann created Houghton White Burgundy. Now known as White Classic, this is still one of the most popular Australian white wines today.x

AWARDS
The reason Houghton is one of Western Australia’s most awarded wineries has everything to do with the people behind the wines.

In the past three decades alone, Houghton wines have won over 250 trophies and 4,800 medals at domestic and international wine shows.
