We didn’t set out to make a single block wine but a number of emotional factors influenced the decision. In 2013, when the first vintage of this wines was made, a batch stood out in the barrel selection tasting as being a cut above the rest. It was decided that it would be sacrilegious to blend away its uniqueness.

The next and more profound influence was the fact that the founder of Juniper, Roger Hill, tragically died a couple of months after the 2013 vintage. Roger’s vision was to make a truly great Margaret River Cabernet. This single block Cabernet is the culmination of the vision and experience of many. A tribute to the vineyard, the region and the man, RNH.

Brilliant deep carmine red in appearance. The bouquet reveals beguiling red & black fruits garlanded with Mediterranean herbs, a touch of mocha & vanillin oak. The palate is full-bodied, bold & muscular. Powerfully fleshy concentrated Cabernet fruit is corseted by chewy but ripe tannins & gossamer-like acidity. Formidable length.

95 Points, Halliday Wine Companion

“Fruit from Block 7, matured for 18 months in French oak (50% new). Underpinned by very good length of cabernet flavour. The oak feels a little heavy handed at this stage, the lingering impression laced with licorice and star anise. It is succulent, dense and concentrated, no doubt, however the 2016 vintage (brilliant for cabernet sauvignon, yet in many cases defined by tannin and acid) makes a hard stamp on this wine. It will live interminably in the cellar without question. Drink by 2051.” Rating: 95/100

Deepish red colour with feint purple tint on the rim. The bouquet is oak dominated at first sniff, the palate drying and tannin-driven with a touch of chew and old fashioned styling. It’s hard to see the cabernet fruit here. A hearty decant is recommended. The wine has serious depth and concentration, and responds well to generous swirling in the glass. Drink 2021 – 2034. About Juniper Estate

Juniper is a producer of premium wines in Margaret River, the heart of the remote, environmentally pristine winegrowing area lying in the south-west corner of Western Australia, 270km south of Perth. We are fortunate that Margaret River is where it is and, with its maritime influence, ancient soils and beautiful landscape is perfectly suited to the production of great wines.

The Juniper ‘Estate’ vineyard (formerly Wright’s) was planted in 1973 and, together with Vasse Felix, Cape Mentelle, Cullen, Moss Wood and Woodlands, is one of the founding vineyards of the region.

Juniper was established in 1998 by the late Roger Hill and his wife, Gillian Anderson, with the intention of producing wines which rank among the best to come from Margaret River and beyond.

Since 2017 Gillian and Roger’s sons, Nick and Tom, have run the business with the same ambition to make great wines from our own vineyards.

Juniper’s outlook combines the tenets of heritage, authenticity and original thinking with a view to producing wines of elegance and sophistication that showcase the best of the Margaret River region. We grow what we make and make what we grow, all from our distinctive vineyards in Wilyabrup and Karridale.

The sites are exciting in their differences, but their farming is united by sustainable and organic practices resulting in the best fruit possible that reflects each vineyard’s idiosyncrasies. Applications of compost from spent marc, sheep manure and the use of inter-row crops to fix nitrogen are all small examples of how we help sustain the natural balance of our land.

The wines we make reflect a combination of their place, vintage and variety, and are expressions of our passion, to be shared and enjoyed in good company.

A deep respect for the history of the region, and the pursuit to push boundaries, drives our outlook in creating wines that reflect their time and place. This begins with careful and thorough manual intervention in the vineyard and attentive yet minimal intervention in the winery.

Important to our philosophy is retention of the individuality of each parcel of fruit, with a block-by-block approach to their winemaking. This enables us control in blending, using complementary parcels to preserve the uniqueness and personality of our distinctive Margaret River sites. Oak maturation is used to enhance complexity and contribute to the refinement of the wines.
