A classically styled cabernet with cedary oak influence across redcurrant, cassis, mint, forest-wood and leafy notes, as well as iodine and purple olive. The palate has a supple core of ripe dark-berry flavours.

Deep red in appearance expressing aromas of dark berries, cassis and ripe plum followed by hints of spice overlaid with chocolate and vanillin oak notes. The palate displays rich layers of concentrated fruit and oak. Blackcurrant, mulberry and spice plum, complemented with subtle oak maturation notes and ripe, silky tannins.

Food Matching: Slow cooked lamb shanks with a red wine sauce, BBQ steak with chimichurri sauce or eggplant parmigiana.

Cellaring Potential: We suggest cellaring for 18 to 20 years.

Caledonia is the poetic name for Scotland and The Caledonian is named in honour of a proud and canny Scot, John Riddoch, founder of the Coonawarra wine region. In 1896, Riddoch made his second vintage in the Katnook woolshed, a beautiful limestone building which today houses Katnook Estate’s barrel room. The Caledonian celebrates an Australian tradition and the unique synergy achieved by combining Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, whilst capturing the renowned terroir of Coonawarra. A philosophy of blending Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon at Katnook Estate has previously achieved the accolade of the 1987 Jimmy Watson Trophy.

Katnook produces a premium, iconic Odyssey Cabernet Sauvignon and Prodigy Shiraz, its flagship Katnook Estate range and the more contemporary Founder’s Block range. These wines epitomise Katnook’s philosophy of crafting wines from carefully selected parcels of fruit that offer great intensity of flavour, fine balance and integrity of regional and varietal character.

A visit to Katnook Estate will give you more than a tasting through delicious wines – it’s also a journey through a century of winemaking history. Katnook is the oldest existing winery in the region and John Riddoch’s beautiful historic buildings
have been restored and converted into our Cellar Door.
