Wonderful aromas of gooseberry, passionfruit, and hints of elderflower. The palate of exotic tropical fruits and textural tone weaving seamlessly with crisp acid and a slice of residual fruit sweetness.

Viticulture
Grapes for this wine were sourced from our 100% Bio-Gro certified organic vineyard in the Waihopai Valley. This valley is slightly higher and cooler than the central part of the Wairau, meaning that our season is slightly later than the rest of Marlborough.

The 2018 -19 growing season was outstanding, with the hottest January on record and excellent flowering conditions. The unusually warm growing season, with plentiful bunches of evenly ripened berries were harvested nearly two weeks earlier than usual. Individual blocks where machine harvested.

It was a race against the weather to ensure our grapes were tucked away safely in the winery before the autumn rain soaked the vines. This extra rain would have diluted the bright acidity in the grapes, which is an important characteristic to this wine’s careful balance of luscious tropical fruit characters and refreshing acidity.

Winemaking
Individual parcels of fruit were harvested by block and vinified separately in order to create this complex expression of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. While principally machine harvested at night and fermented in stainless steel, we also hand harvested select portions to whole bunch press and fill directly to seasoned French oak barrels for high solids fermentation.

These solids impart an intriguing character to the wine which we believe is a hallmark of great white wine regardless of variety. Each component whether in tank or barrel, was kept on lees for 100 days to allow the yeast to “give back” something to the wine, a term the French call “elevage-sur-lies”.
