Pinot Gris can come in many styles of wine, from crunchy and crisp through to broader and richer, and sometimes even with a pale pink-bronze colour.

The Clare Valley is well suited to the variety given the region’s global reputation for excellent dry rieslings, which inform the way the best pinot gris in the region is created with a similar exciting personality.

Our place
Koonowla is one of the Clare Valley’s thriving treasures, an extraordinary homestead and estate with sweeping grounds, a historic gravity fed winery under refurbishment, and significant vineyard pedigree going back to the 1890s.

It is an outstanding showcase for the region’s southern gateway district of Auburn, with cellar door and function venue attractions supporting our exciting portfolio of contemporary wines.

Our Pinot Gris
Grown on an elevated, rocky site west of the township of Auburn, our single-vineyard pinot gris was hand-harvested at the perfect point of ripeness to create a brilliantly fresh style of wine.

Our commitment to hand-picked fruit is vital in achieving pure colour and appealing grape character in the finished wine. In fact, we already began the process back in the vineyard by thinning 30% of the crop to enhance flavour intensity.
Once we are in the winery, gentle handling and minimal interference and inputs are key to protecting the delicate purity of our pinot gris fruit and attaining the bright wine style we love.

You want crisp and refreshing drinking thrills? Taste our pinot gris – it delivers exciting summer refreshment in every sip.

About Koonowla – Clare Valley

Koonowla is one of the Clare Valley’s most iconic and picturesque properties with beautiful historic stone buildings and rolling broad acre hills. Located just east of Auburn in the Clare Valley of South Australia, the property was first planted with vines in the 1890s. By the early 1900’s Koonowla was producing from its own winery and cellars 250,000 litres of wine annually before a disastrous fire in 1926 burnt the winery and reduced the vineyard size, and with changing times saw land use convert mostly to grain and wool production.

In 1985 a vineyard replanting program was started and by 2001 plantings had grown to 240 acres. Rationalization some years later saw Koonowla’s vineyard area reduce to 120 acres. Today the Koonowla vineyard comprises blocks of meticulously selected terroir most suited to producing the highest quality classic Clare Valley varietals of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Riesling, as well as a small block of both Merlot and Semillon. Koonowla is a leader in the field of high-quality sustainable viticulture.
