This single-block wine is crafted from a 0.79-hectare parcel of gently sloping vines that are now 24 years old. These mature vines naturally yield low quantities of fruit, a result of their unique orientation, excellent drainage, and significant exposure. The soil in this block contains a notably higher concentration of ironstone pebbles than any other area of the vineyard, contributing to a wine of remarkable concentration and a distinctive, savoury tannic structure.

Fermentation took place in a large-format wooden vat and proceeded spontaneously with native yeasts, lasting 17 days. A portion of whole bunches was included in the ferment. After fermentation, the wine was pressed and transferred to French oak barriques, 20% of which were new, where it underwent malolactic fermentation driven by indigenous bacteria. The wine was racked only once during its 14-month maturation and was bottled unfined and unfiltered.

The resulting wine is bright and energetic, offering aromas of red florals, orange peel, and blue fruits, layered with dark, woodsy spice and hints of undergrowth. The palate is filled with chewy, sinewy tannins and a smoky spice character, complemented by flavours of violet and black cherry. With excellent drive and breadth, the finish is long, firm, and enveloping—yet retains an elegant, pretty edge. While expressive now, this wine promises to evolve beautifully with time in the cellar.

About Kooyong Estate

The Kooyong vineyard is located on the Mornington Peninsula at Tuerong, on Miocene sedimentary soils. Our wines are made from domain grown, handpicked grapes and aim to manifest terroir: the integration of our geology and soils with the macroclimate of our region, the mesoclimates of the various sites within our vineyard and the weather of the annual grape growing season.

Our cultural operations in the vineyard and practices in the winery endeavour to articulate these unique characteristics diligently, respectfully and without artifice.

An architectural landmark and one of the most exciting food and wine destinations in Australia, Kooyong Wines is located at Port Phillip Estate.
