As a variety it occupies 28% of vineyard area in Australia. It was one of the original varieties imported to Australia in the 1830’s and it is planted in every wine region in Australia (at least every one I can think of!!).

When people think of Australian wine they automatically think of Shiraz.
Why then the name Syrah? Syrah is what the French call Shiraz and this wine is made in a traditional Old World style, using 3000L oak vessel for fermentation and then maturation in traditional 1200L oval oak foudres. This allows for both a pure expression of the rich fruit and spicy aromatics of Australian Shiraz as well as the development of the savouriness and texture reminiscent of Syrah. A truly delicious wine.

About Lethbridge Wines

Lethbridge Wines is the Australian fine wine dream built with imagination, fearless determination, perspiration, integrity and confidence.” Andrew Caillard, MW Goumet Traveller Wine July 2009

Our aim is to produce natural, savoury wines that focus on balance and texture with a real sense of place or terroir.

The Flagship Vineyard in Lethbridge, located 30 km north west of Geelong, was originally planted in 1874 by Swiss immigrants and was replanted by the owners of Lethbridge Wines in 1996. This vineyard is managed using sustainable principles, informed by organic and biodynamic practices.

Maree Collis and Ray Nadeson are not your average winemaker/owners of a boutique winery. Both were initially trained as research scientists and hold PhD degrees in chemistry and medicine, respectively. Mid career they made the decision to pursue their alternate passion and together with friend Adrian Thomas established Lethbridge Wines in 1996.

Both Maree and Ray completed their winemaking degree at Charles Sturt University after which Ray concluded “winemaking is not really that different to science, both are creative and both involve 99% perspiration, 1% inspiration”.

“As well as understanding the importance of terroir, the partners have built a unique strawbale winery, designed to recreate the controlled environment of cellars and caves in Europe. Winemaking is no less ecological: hand-picking, indigenous-yeast fermentation, small open fermenters, pigeage (foot-stomping) and minimal handling of the wines throughout the maturation process are all part and parcel of the highly successful Lethbridge approach.” James Halliday

On the one hand, our role as a merchant of all things wine & spirits could not be simpler. We aim to source the most delicious, the most authentic, and the highest quality products possible from Australia and around the world in order to offer them to our clients. We live or die by how well we perform this task. Of course things are rarely as simple or as easy as they seem. Hunting for wines & spirits is no different. Apart from the months spent travelling, countless days and evenings spent tasting and the outrageous wine expenditure in the name of ‘research’, sourcing quality wine and spirits requires expertise and experience. Understanding the potential of a producer and their products is much more than just a slurp and a spit.
