One block of vines on our property has always been referred to as the Money Garden. The patch of Cabernet Sauvignon is where numerous lost coins have been found. Through the generations, many people working in these vines have been lucky to find a Lost Penny.

The 2019 vintage started out with the growing season being dry and it continued that way, with below average rainfall for all of the months. Budburst and early vine growth were delayed in September with below average minimum temperatures, but then caught up during October and November with warmer than average days. January and December resulted in above average maximum temperatures. With February closer to average maximums and below average minimum,it made for the ideal timing, and resulted in the perfect conditions for ripening the smaller crops. By the end of the second week in April we had finished harvest, which was one of the earliest on record.

Colour: Dark deep red with a garnet hue
Nose: Sweet cinnamon, blackcurrant and touch of leafy tonnes.
Palate: A fine and elegant structure with mouth filling intense berry fruits. Rich earthy leafy notes giving a complex structure.

The 2019 Lost Penny Money Garden Cabernet Sauvignon has an overall sweet spiced nose and palate with an elegant structure and full mouth feel of rich berry and leafy characters. This wine will continue to evolve over many years with careful cellaring.

About Lost Penny Wines

Carol and Nick, it’s somewhat of a natural progression for them to begin making wine with their own grapes in the Barossa Valley.

Having grown up among the Barossa vines, Carol and Nick earned their pocket money in family vineyards.

Carol near Angaston, and Nick on the same Ebenezer blocks that today produces the bounty of fruit used in Lost Penny Wines.

Their combined knowledge, passion, family heritage and dedication to preserving Barossa winemaking traditions have all been poured into Lost Penny Wines.

Here in the Northern Barossa region of Ebenezer, the oldest Shiraz vines were planted into fertile soils more than 100 years ago.

Their harvest brought hope and opportunity to generations past and they’ve weathered countless seasons.

And it’s this rich and textured history that the Riebke family are determined to both preserve and evolve.

By respecting the old traditions, working with the land using holistic and sustainable principles, yet also incorporating new knowledge and practices.
