2023 was an “exciting year to be working with alternative varieties from the river”, according to Kev. As was the case elsewhere in Victoria, yields were low in the Murray Darling, but the fruit that made it through to harvest was of excellent quality. The cooler-than-usual season allowed for long hang times, plenty of flavour development and great natural freshness.

This is the MDI wine most inspired by Gravner, and it’s always the most seductive, hedonistic and texturally vibrant in the range. Ribolla Gialla is a grape that shines all the brighter when shown some skin-contact love. It can appear relatively neutral in the vineyard, but get the skins involved and it comes alive. The fruit was sourced from the Chalmers vineyard and spent 77 days on skins in stainless steel. The wine was then drained and transferred to three-year-old hogsheads for a few weeks before being bottled.

About MDI Wines

MDI doubles down on its maker’s skin contact infamy, releasing ongoing limited editions of unique, small batch varietals that even Google won’t know.

Born from our winemaker Kev’s decades of experience (and success) in the region, the brand champions its local growers, esoteric European varieties, and traditional, sustainable winemaking methods. Hung on Sangiovese and Pinot Grigio – with a punk edge,

Mandi are all about showcasing the best of the best of Mildura’s Mediterranean varieties.

Winemaker Kevin McCarthy is a bit of a wine rebel – cutting his teeth originally in the Mornington Peninsula, his winemaking philosophy became shaped by multiple trips to Europe.

He learned all there is to know about skin contact wine, directly from northern Italian winemakers themselves, and he applies all that knowledge to his wonderful fleet of great value, alternative variety Aussie wines.

Fine Wine Cellars

On the one hand, our role as a merchant of all things wine & spirits could not be simpler. We aim to source the most delicious, the most authentic, and the highest quality products possible from Australia and around the world in order to offer them to our clients. We live or die by how well we perform this task. Of course things are rarely as simple or as easy as they seem. Hunting for wines & spirits is no different. Apart from the months spent travelling, countless days and evenings spent tasting and the outrageous wine expenditure in the name of ‘research’, sourcing quality wine and spirits requires expertise and experience. Understanding the potential of a producer and their products is much more than just a slurp and a spit.
