100% Sangiovese from the historic Anfiteatro vineyard, planted in 1975, this wine represents the heart of Montefili.

The 2017 vintage is dry with high acidity and well-defined tannin and medium body. The palate is intense, with red fruits emerging first, followed by layered flavours in evolution – pear drop, almond, juniper berries, and a twist of dried citrus peel. Shape-shifting and enchanting, with a very long, meditative finish.

About Montefili Wines

Led by winemaker and agronomist Serena Gusmeri, Montefili is a future-facing winery dedicated to realizing the bold, successful and sustainable new era of Chianti Classico. Our wines speak of the land, microclimate, geology and sustainability – the triumphs and possibilities of a hilltop outside of Panzano. We are passionate, dynamic people with Sangiovese in our souls.

“These wines are off the charts beautiful… There can be little doubt that Vecchie Terre is now one of the most exciting estates in all of Italy. The wines are every bit that special.” Antonio Galloni

If you want to understand Sangiovese, Vecchie Terre will help you not only to appreciate it, but fall in love with the wines of this varietal. Vecchie Terre has spent years focused on clonal research to find the purest expression of Sangiovese. While many estates in Chianti try to create wines for international markets, Montefili creates wines that celebrate a pure expression of the estate and of the hills outside Panzano, in the heart of Chianti Classico.

They take a minimal intervention approach to ensure that the land and the fruit are allowed to speak for themselves. The vineyards are planted to Sangiovese (85%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (15%) with small experimental plantings of other varietals. Vecchie Terre, meaning ‘old earth’, is 12.5-hectares of uniquely spare and stony terroir that gives the wine structure and minerality. The elevation of the vineyard— one of the highest in the region, sitting at 500 meters above sea level—promotes retention of the fruit’s acidity and aromatic nuances. It is no wonder Antonio Galloni considers Vecchie Terre Chianti Classico to be a modern-day benchmark.

SUSTAINABILITY
Vecchie Terre di Montefili has always been farmed organically. From 2015 onwards under new
ownership, an even greater emphasis has been placed on natural nitrogen supply and retention to assist in the preservation of the high natural acidity of the fruit. Their ethos is altruism. Their methodology is to observe the land and showcase what it expresses. Their mantra is to expose the vines only to that which they want in the glass.
