Founded in 1969, Moss Wood is a pioneering winery in the Margaret River wine region of Western Australia, situated in the Wilyabrup sub-region. Renowned for its dedication to quality, the estate is managed by Clare and Keith Mugford, who have been at the helm since 1984 and 1979, respectively. Their meticulous approach to viticulture ensures the production of exceptional grapes, contributing to Moss Wood’s reputation for crafting consistently high-quality wines that age gracefully.
Moss Wood is celebrated for its Cabernet Sauvignon, first planted in 1969, with the inaugural vintage released in 1973. Over the years, the estate has expanded its portfolio to include Semillon, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay. The acquisition of the Ribbon Vale vineyard in 2000 further enriched its offerings.
The estate’s philosophy revolves around continuous improvement in vineyard practices, inspired by the Bordeaux style while embracing the unique Margaret River climate. Moss Wood’s wines, particularly its Cabernet Sauvignon, have received numerous accolades, including “exceptional” rankings in Langton’s Classification and top scores from prominent wine critics.
