THE SILURIAN LATE DISGORGED

The name refers to the geological age (ca. 430 million years) of the rock from which our soils are derived. The Silurian is made in the traditional method from the classic varieties, chardonnay and pinot noir. The cool to mild Canberra District climate, coupled with exacting viticulture, allows harvest of these varieties at relatively low sugar ripeness, high acidity, and the delicate fruit flavours required for this very elegant style of sparkling wine. Extended lees age prior to disgorging gives autolysis complexity in addition to normal cellaring development. This is our second Late Disgorged release.

2011 VINTAGE

The 2011 vintage was unusually wet, in contrast to the drought years 2003-2010. Temperatures were lower, especially daytime temperatures, but they were only a little below long-term averages – again, the contrast is with the many warm to hot years in the last decade. Disease pressure was high, and our pickers spent far longer than usual, ensuring that only clean fruit entered the winery. Quality of these reduced yields was very high, with wonderful aromatics and natural acidity.

WINEMAKING

Hand-picked 8 and 15 March 2011: Chardonnay (61%) Pinot Noir (47%) and at an average 9.8Bé and 12.6g/L titratable acidity. Fruit was chilled in the picking lugs prior to whole bunch pressing, and only modest juice yields taken. The base wine was fermented with neutral yeast and spent an extended period on yeast lees prior to tirage in March 2012. This late disgorgement December 2023; Diam cork seal, dosage 3.5g/L. Alcohol 11.5% by volume. Vegan friendly?: No (fined with a milk product).

TASTING NOTES

The very zesty and lean wine we knew from earlier disgorgements has developed a complex spread of richer aromatics from crackers and pastry to beef stock and toast. The palate remains linear and fine, with succulent acidity. Serve in larger-bowled glasses.

About Mount Majura Vineyard

Mount Majura Vineyard lies near the top of the Majura Valley, just outside the city of Canberra. The valley floor, too frosty in Spring for vines, was a camping area and transit corridor for the original Ngunnawal people.

On the slopes of the valley, where the the cold air drains away, the soil has developed from two geological formations. Limestone was deposited in the Silurian era, 430 million years ago, at the beginning of the simplest life on land. The Ainslie Volcanics, which form Mount Majura itself, were deposited very shortly afterwards.

To a vigneron, an east-facing slope with limestone speaks softly but urgently of a need to plant vines. So it was that the late Dr Edgar Riek, a pioneer of viticulture in the Canberra District, came to plant a vineyard together with the then owner of our site, Mrs Dinny Killen. In 1988, the first hectare of Mount Majura Vineyard was planted, to pinot noir, chardonnay, and a field-blend of cabernet franc and merlot.
