The Light Dry Red (LDR) is a wine influenced by the famous ‘Hunter River Burgundies’ which were typically Shiraz or blends of Pinot Noir and Shiraz. The name ‘Burgundy’ used to describe lighter bodied styles of wine. These Australian Hunter River Burgundies are up there with some of the best wines Ive ever tried and in-fact is the inspiration behind launching my own wines in 2017.

The 2021 LDR is a blend of Shiraz (40%), Pinot Noir (40%) and Sangiovese (10%), an odd combination of varieties but absolutely focussed on crafting a seamless light bodied style of red with beautiful freshness, natural acidity and tannins. The incredible thing about these styles of wines is their remarkable approachability when young, yet great ability to age for long periods of time in the cellar.

The fruit for the 2021 Light Dry Red was grown in Gundagai on ancient soil that can be traced back some 400 million years ago to the Cambrian period. Interestingly, the soil is defined as ‘Red Ferresol’ and gets its deep red colour from oxidised iron stone. Remarkably the red wines grown on these soils have an earthy almost ferrous character to them which in some way must be related to the soil.

If you like wines such as Pinot Noir, or lighter styles of Sangiovese and Grenache you will love this wine and I highly recommend drinking some now and putting a few away to mature.
