AUSTRALIA WIDE SHIPPING INCLUDED

The grapes for our 2021 Syrah were sourced from Shay’s Flat located in the Pyrenees.

Shay’s Flat is produced on an east-facing ridge in the southern foothills. It appears as a natural amphitheater with red soils of schist, quartz, and rich clay. The vineyard features ten hectares of Shiraz in two parcels. The vineyard sits at an altitude of 350m in the Western Pyrenees Ranges and is organically farmed.

Picking the grapes early at 12.8 Baume from the coolest part of the site, we cold soaked in open vats for 5 days and lightly pressed the grapes in our hand basket press. This wine was aged in 2 year old French oak barrels for 18 months creating a soft, approachable and textured wine, with a medium red hue. The nose is savoury with dusty bitter dark chocolate and cherry pith and suggestions of spice and pepper on the palate.

About Northern Hope Wines

Richard (Eddie) and Samantha Edwards, originally from Manchester UK, are the proud owners of Northern Hope Winery. With a background in digital advertising and as a Creative Director respectively, both share a love for good wine.

Their move to Australia in 2012 was an exciting adventure, and they quickly fell in love with Australian wine, exploring various wine regions and witnessing the passion within the industry. It was only a matter of time before they decided to give winemaking a go themselves. The Macedon Ranges was an obvious choice due to its cool climate, terroir, and welcoming community of winemakers. After assisting other winemakers for several years, they decided to take the leap and start their own label.

They acquired the ideal hillside property with north-east facing slopes, deep, fertile soil, and a microclimate perfectly suited for growing premium wine grapes. Other wineries in the area, including Lanes End and Wilimee, also recognise the potential of this terroir.

Eddie acquired invaluable hands-on experience in winemaking while working as a cellar hand at a local contract winemaking facility. In addition, they have actively participated in the vintage at various Macedon Ranges wineries over the past few years, which has provided them with exposure to diverse winemaking techniques and helped them develop a distinctive style.

In 2018, we planted 1700 Pinot Noir MV6 clones, on a rolling slope with help from our friends and family. We’re very excited to see these vines grow and develop however as they will not be ready to produce grapes until 2022, we have sourced grapes from an established local Macedon Ranges Vineyard and this vintage is now ready to be purchased.

Once you get to know us, you’ll see that we’re two hard working Northerners, we like to remember our roots and produce wines that are true to this region with minimal intervention.
