The Vins de Fruit are wines that emphasise the grape’s expression rather than a specific terroir expression. They are not limited to a single site or soil type, and instead embody the intricate parcellation and diversity of Alsatian terroirs that exist even in a small area like a single village.

2021 was a tough vintage for volumes although the quality overall was superb. So in 2021 Les Jardins Pinot 2021 is a blend between Pinot Blanc Les Jardins and Pinot Gris Les Jardins.

The volumes were so small that I preferred to blend them to get a good volume for the fermentation. The fermentations were in barrel and the final taste is similar to the Pinot Blanc with the final blend having very nice acidity and the body of pinot gris. It’s a good match and the wine is fermented through to dryness.

About Ostertag Wines

André Ostertag is described as a revolutionary winemaker and arguably Alsace’s most famous and respected. He is a pioneer, pushing the appellations boundaries, constantly experimenting and innovating to coax the ultimate expression of terroir. It is fairly young domaine, which began life in the 1960s, has 13 hectares of vines split among 75 plots in five villages. He looks for the nuance of terroir rather than the typicity of a grape varietal.

In an act of rejection against the official classifications dictated by the A.O.C., he made up his own categories. Vins de Fruit that express fruit character rather than that of a specific vineyard site; Vins de Pierre reflecting the terroir from which they originate, and; Vin de Temps that rely on time and weather to encourage the development of botrytis.

Arthur embodies this same approach. His instincts are as passionate and strong as that of his father and the wines continue to evolve in a way that honours the appellation.
