Patrick Sullivan is a name synonymous with exceptional Australian Chardonnay.

The 2024 chardonnay opens with lively citrus notes of lime, lemon and grapefruit, complemented by aromas of nutmeg spice and hazelnut oak, and as the glass warms, richer layers of ripe peach, vanilla custard and buttered toast emerge. The wine also features a delicate lacework of minerality and zesty acidity that cuts through its creamy crème brûlée opulence. With its freshness, concentration and nuanced oak influence, it offers a long, fruit-driven finish.

Soil: Volcanic topsoil with varying limestone and basalt, and flint stone depending on site.

Vinification: The fruit is whole cluster crushed, pressed then drained off into tank for settling. Primary fermentation takes place in barrique and tank with approximately 25% new oak used.

“The 2023 rendering of this wine was a ripper for the bucks, and this follows that trajectory. Mixed Coonawarra fruit and some from surrounds maketh the blend. It pours with a light golden colour which reminded me of SA chardonnay of ye olden times. Scents and flavours match that, cinnamon toast, wheat, light honeyed notes, peach, red apple and yet almond and cashew nut there too. It’s quite soft but manages enough chalky fringes from refreshment factor. It delivers a sense of ‘this will get butter and supple with time in cellar’. It finishes slightly toasty and wheaty again. It feels familiar, a wine from the past, the affordable cellar dweller for the flavourtown chardonnay drinkers, and it’s great for that.” 92 points. Mike Bennie, The Wine Front

About Patrick Sullivan Wines

Born of the many rural regions of Victoria, Patrick had a nomadic childhood.

His first vinous whiff probably came whilst climbing the Cambrian hills north of central victoria on a farm his family once owned.

All grown up and married to the beautiful Megan, they live and make wine on their own farm in the Strzelecki ranges, Gippsland, Australia.

The wines are inspired by emotion, a moment in time and a sense of place.

Principal Wines

We are wine lovers with no agenda, except to work with people who grow grapes, and to put their wines into the hands of people we respect.

We bring many years’ collective experience working in restaurants and winemaking to Principal Wine and think we have a pretty good idea of how a great glass of wine tastes.

Things change all the time in the world of wine, but our core values always remain the same - to work with people who make their wine in the vineyard, to have fine wine to sell to places we’d like to drink ourselves, and to provide excellent service.
