Rich, ripe, red berry aromas complement hints of plum, aniseed, dark chocolate and sweet oak. A uniquely soft but full, bold and complex palate is balanced by silky smooth tannins, subtle integrated oak and a grippy finish.

Different vinification of the dominant Swan Coastal Mariginiup portion from that of the Miamup Road vineyard in Margaret River (both estate), resulted in a mix of 30% new American oak and 10% new French oak, the Swan wine pressed direct to the former, the Margaret River to the latter, in each case with used French oak making up the balance. Ripe cherry and plum fruits have a savoury backdrop, the tannins fine but persistent.
Rating: 90 points. James Halliday Wine Companion 2018

Vineyard
For over 50 years, shiraz has been sourced from our Mariginiup vineyard located on the unique Tuart soils just north of Perth. The ever-increasing sprawl of Perth has diminished the size of the vineyard to only two acres which is still used as the core fruit in the blend. The Miamup Road fruit is grown on quartzy light soils over clay which produces fruit with ripe soft tannins not dissimilar to that of the old Mariginiup vineyard. Our aim each year, for the final blend, is to select the best parcels of fruit that represent the Mariginiup style.

Harvest
Both vineyards were hand-harvested. The Mariginiup vineyard on 1 March with the slightest amount of berry shrivel; The Miamup Road block was harvested on 23 March in pristine condition and juicy fruit characters.

Winemaking
Following de-stemming and crushing, the Mariginiup fruit was fermented in 3 tonne concrete open fermenters for seven days with regular pump-overs and hand-plunging. It was then basket-pressed directly to new American oak. The Margaret River fruit was also fermented for a longer, cooler fermentation to retain greater fruit flavours.

A small portion was pressed directly to new French oak for the completion of fermentation. The remainder to tank where it was transferred to seasoned French oak once malolactic fermentation was complete. All components were kept separate until the final blend was assembled with the intention to keep the style consistent with previous Mariginiup vintages. The 2018 vintage was a slightly cooler year, resulting in a more elegant style.

About Paul Conti Wines

From humble beginnings in 1948, Paul Conti Wines has become one of WA’s most reputable and respected boutique, family-owned wineries. Located only 30 minutes north of Perth, the Woodvale property, which now houses a modern winery and restaurant, was the original homestead of Carmelo (aka Charlie) and Rosa Conti who, in 1927, immigrated to Australia from a small town in their homeland of Sicily.

The Conti’s raised eight children in the beautiful stone house which has since been converted into a fine dining restaurant, however the property was once the hub of a rural self-sufficient lifestyle. Based on black, fertile swampy soils the conditions were ideal for growing vegetables, planting an orchard and of course nurturing vines.

Cheese and milk, (thanks to the resident cow), pasta, sausages and of course wine were all produced at the property. Today, small historic reminders remain with the old fruit and olive trees still growing strong.

In 1948, Charlie began expanding the modest vineyard to cater to a growing domestic market. The original cellar located directly beneath the family home and which remains today, was dug out by two of the Conti brothers by horse (a stubborn creature, but fondly remembered as Mary) and scoop.

It was from this time onward that a then, young Paul learnt the traditional art of wine making and decades later, became an industry pioneer in his own right.

“It has always been our mission to produce full flavoured, elegant wines that reflect the unique qualities of the regions where our fruit is grown.” Paul Conti.

From 1968 Paul began upgrading the small winery and became the first vigneron to produce premium bottled wine from Tuart soils (a direct result of Tuart trees grown along the coastal strip where the vineyards are located). Early success was achieved with his award winning Mariginiup Hermitage [now called shiraz], an exclusive wine still made from the original vines planted on the Mariginiup vineyard in 1958.
