Its fresh and lively, a wine that does not take itself too seriously but look and you will see red current fruit with a hint of strawberry jam. There is varietal correctness from a cool year with a touch of leaf and a soft plush finish which really helps to define this style. Delicious.
2022 was an exceptionally late harvest. This was mainly due to the cool and wet spring that we had and the well-known presence of a La Nina weather cycle. Low crops and open canopies where essential to getting the fruit ripe. The fruit comes from a vineyard we affectionately call La Colline, sitting at 910m it is our highest elevation vineyard and a great site to define the possibilities of Cabernet Franc in a cool climate.
In a cool year Cabernet Franc is at its most expressive. Its not a monster rather a finely boned dancer, the colours on the label describe it well. Really all we did was ferment in large open oak vats with wild yeast and gentle plunged twice a day. Extended skin contact gave it depth and a savoury edge. It was aged in large demi muid barrels for 10 months.

A cool climate region can be defined as an area with heat degree days of 1600 or less. Cool nights in the growing season, large diurnal variation, long cool autumns and distinct seasons are also key factors in defining a cool climate region.
Orange is one of a handful of regions in Australia that fall into this category. Orange is unique among these regions due to the cool climate being the result of continental conditions rather than latitude.
