Pirathon Silver Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 is bright deep red. The nose consists of Lifted aromatics of black fruits, quince and olive with subtle French oak / spice aromatics. The palate is A rich and full bodied style of Cabernet with upfront fruit and a generous mid palate. Fruit flavours are dark in the black current spectrum with savoury notes of olive tapenade and roasted beets adding layers of complexity. Tannins like all Pirathon wines are ripe and expressive ensuring drinkability from an early age. Oak is subtle (10% new French oak) with hints of thyme, cardamom and cedar.

Each vineyard was harvested at optimal maturity across a 6 week period from March 10 to April 25. Following harvest, each individual lot of grapes was crushed into a separate open top fermenter. During fermentation, hand pump-overs gently extracted colour and flavour from the grapes. After 7-10 days on skins the fermented grapes were pressed with a traditional press. The wines were then filled to new and seasoned American, French, Russian and Hungarian oak hogsheads for maturation for eighteen months before each lot of wine was racked from the barrel and carefully blended. The wine was bottled without fining, ensuring the true expression of the vineyards in the bottle.

About Pirathon Wines

Pirathon produces a range of full bodied Shiraz (Syrah) encompassing the great flavour, texture and structure of the north-western Barossa. Pirathon is highly awarded wine brand with many medals and trophies won at wine competitions around the world.

“Pirathon” is an ancient word meaning prince, peak, summit etc and was an ancient city located in the current state of Israel. We were fascinated by the name “Pirathon” as it’s quite different sounding than other wine brands. The North-Western Barossa is well known for its Shiraz grapes and we came up with the idea of putting a map of North-Western Barossa on the label along with using an arrow on the label. In the original design, the arrow was pointing North but we thought an arrow will go well with the “Pirathon” meaning of peak/summit so we then decided to turn the arrow 45 degrees to the left so that it is pointing to the North-West. The arrow was then stylised and coloured. We then put all the components together to form the final Pirathon label – A map of North-Western Barossa highlighted by the stylised arrow pointing to the North-West which all corresponds with the meaning of the word.

In essence, Pirathon is an ancient word for pinnacle and we believe Shiraz is the pinnacle grape of the Barossa and that the north-western Barossa is the pinnacle sub-appellation for Shiraz.

Originally set up by the Kalleske family the Pirathon brand was sold in late 2017 and has continued to go from strength to strength. The Kalleske family created an excellent brand and award-winning wine with Pirathon Wines. Our aim is to further support this excellent foundation to ensure the business grows organically and sustainably over the long term.

Our wines are produced at our state of the art winery located in the picturesque Barossa Valley which is capable of processing 480 tonnes of grapes per year. With our own facilities we can control everything from the vineyard all the way through the winemaking process to produce the best possible wine. We use screw cap closures to improve the consistency of our bottled wine.

The Pirathon Vineyard is located in the Barossa Valley grape growing region and consists of 52.14 acres (21.10 ha) of vines, with the earliest block dating back to 1970.

“From seven growers in the north western districts of the Barossa Valley. A densely packed and powerful wine, each lot of grapes separately open-fermented, thence to new and used puncheons from four countries. Deeply coloured and complex, the oak is presently flexing its muscles, and the ripe tannins and the black fruits, dark chocolate and spices are keeping a respectful distance.”
