Deep Maroon with purple hues.

Complex aromatics of ripe cassis and blueberries all intertwined with rich cedar oak and hints of black olive and dark chocolate. A wine structured and built for aging. Almost endless supply of fruit weight on the mid-palate ably carried along with ripe, layered tannins of extraordinary length.

Separate parcels of machine harvest fruit were destemmed into open top fermenters without any chilling and then inoculated with a cultured yeast strain. Throughout fermentation, phenolic extraction was carefully managed with a combination of hand plunging and pump overs 2-4 times daily. The finished wine was allowed to undergo extended maceration on skins for up to four weeks post-fermentation before being pressed to tank and racked to French Barriques (60% new) for malolactic fermentation. The wine was matured for 15 months before blending, filtration, light fining, and bottling.

Pair with Venison Tenderloin and Blueberry Sauce.

Limited and Exclusive. A wine that will cellar for a minimum of 15 years. 744 Bottles Made.

95 Points – “It’s the palate weight and refined powdery tannins that make this such a unique cabernet sauvignon. This is a serious red, grown and crafted for its structure and mouthfeel. Sure, there’s a richly scented, wildy varied, combination of aromatics including bay leaf red berries, blackberry, bramble, cocoa and toasty oak, but the essence of this wine is chesterfield-like comfort on the palate. Neatly structured. Charming and proper.” – Paul Edwards, The West Australian

95 Points – “First impressions are silky and fragrant, but this rapidly shuts down and the wine gets all dark and brooding. This is an intense, powerful wine that is built for the long haul. Having said that, at no time does this get harsh or aggressive. With patience, this will be a star. A complete wine.” – Barry Weinman, Fine Wine Club

96 Points (4.5 Stars) – Winestate Magazine

92 Points + Top In Category – “Aromas of vanilla, cassis and mint move into a structured core of fine yet firm tannins. Flavours of lead pencil shavings emerge within the darker fruit set. It’s a little angular at the moment, it has stuffing but needs time to flesh out. The hallmarks of a very good wine are there, time will tell.” – Gabrielle Poy, The Real Review

93 Points – “Dried oregano, bay leaf and sage on the nose, accompanied by a melange of blackberries and damp leaves. In the mouth the wine speaks clearly of its Mount Barker roots. It is earthy, layered with red dirt and gravel, and shaped by close knit tannins. Very smart, the cooler year imbuing the wine with a little detail and nuance in the mid palate.” – Erin Larkin, Halliday Wine Companion

93 Points – James Suckling

About Plantagenet Wines

Plantagenet’s vineyard estate has been carved out of the regions distinctive Marri Soils named after the massive native Marri, or Red Gum trees that grow here. The soils are ironstone gravelly sandy loams over a base of clay or ironstone rock. The vineyard block sites were selected where good water drainage allows control over vine vigour, one of the most important determinants of fruit quality.

Irrigation is used infrequently and only to supplement natural rainfall events forcing the vine roots deep into the subsoil and building natural resilience within the vine. The combination of soils, landforms and climate – or terroir – creates wines of rare distinction and quality.

High quality blocks from these vineyards are well known to the winemaking team and special care and attention is given throughout the growing season to those that historically make the “Wyjup Collection” and Plantagenet Estate wines.
