Sourced from the Stansborough vineyard, we are lovers of blends that bring to life something unique and quite different from any of the single varietals that go into the wine. When we planted Montepulciano and Aglianico alongside the Shiraz the idea was certainly to release single varietals but also with the intention of producing a single vineyard blend.

Complexity and structure and length, these two Italian varieties deliver these elements, a perfect foil when blended with Shiraz. We think the combination of the Australian and Italian varieties provides an interesting wine with a lot of complexity and style. As such we sought a name for the blend that had roots in the Italian side, and came up with the Italian word Serata which roughly translates into coming together and having a pleasant evening with friends.

About Purple Hands wines

When two good mates get together, one the Chief Winemaker with a major winery, the other with a passion for wine – the inevitable had to happen and Purple Hands Wines was created.

Craig Stansborough and Mark Slade started Purple Hands in 2006 from humble beginnings. Just over a tonne of hand picked Shiraz was crushed and barrel fermented in Craig’s shed making around 100 dozen. Then came the hard part – finding a name for their new wine brand.

Anyone who has made red wine will know what a pair of purple stained hands looks like! A red winemakers’ hands become stained purple during vintage due to the constant contact with grape skins and the juice. And of  course when winemakers are busy, they wipe their hands on their shirt. That was the inspiration behind Purple Hands Wines. We experimented with some white t-shirts, some red wine and some fun in the garden. The rest was left to the label designer to translate our concept to the label.

Our home vineyard – Stansborough is situated in the Southern Barossa just north west of Williamstown. Literally, a stones throw from the Whispering Wall reservoir. The 32 acre vineyard is planted on perfect Shiraz dirt, friable red clay over limestone. The vineyard plantings include Shiraz, Montepulciano and Aglianico. The southern end of the valley is recognized as the “cooler” end of the valley, with slightly lower temperatures and longer ripening periods to develop flavours.
