95 Points by James Halliday in the James Halliday Wine Companion 2020

Cabernet leads the fray, with 11/2/1% merlot/shiraz/malbec. Greater than the sum of its parts, each a mere tool in a drive toward weight, complexity and detail, driven by the black olive / saline notes of this maritime zone. Warm and rich, sure. But fresh, layered, impeccably balanced and immensely savoury. The swab of sage-brushed tannins across the attenuated finish, a mark of class.

Colour: Bright crimson red with vivid hue
Bouquet: Richly aromatic with fresh cedar, tobacco, leaf & plum fruits
Palate: Powerful expression of McLaren Vale Cabernet Sauvignon with rich sweet plums, rhubarb and blueberry fruit with influences of cedary oak and fine tight tannin structure. A wine of intensity
with abundant fruit with structural tannins providing the wine with focus and reigning in the fruit density to provide a wine of balance and persistence of flavour.

Cellaring: 13 to 15 years

Established in 1838 by John Reynell, the Reynella winery enjoys the unrivalled prestige of the birthplace of South Australia’s internationally renowned wine industry, and is the proud home of the State’s oldest operating wine cellar. Handpicked fruit from 3 old vine sites in McLaren Vale then berry sorted, fermented in open fermenters & basket pressed with maturation in French barriques for 17 months maturation. 2017 was a more ‘traditional’ McLaren Vale vintage with a cold winter and early spring leading to a late start to bud burst. The spring and summer period was relatively mild with no significant heat spikes to cause sunburn or canopy damage. Yields were average to above average and significant effort was applied to get crops into balance with bunch thinning. The end result was a relatively long mild ripening period without disease risk allowing fruit to develop wonderful fruit intensity and excellent natural balance. A very good year ideally suited to Cabernet Sauvignon based McLaren Vale reds
