No.99 is our “Out of the Square” label – a veritable Winemakers’ Playground created to allow the occasional release of unique, small-batch and one-off wines. These Rieslings are experimental in nature and diverse in style, with no two releases being the same. The 2023 No.99 heralds the arrival of our brand-new 1500L French Oak Foudre; celebrating the flavours and texture imparted by the first-fill of this premium oak vessel, woven amongst the classic flavours of Watervale and Flaxman Valley Riesling.

It is a rare thing to see brand-new oak in Australian Riesling, but when done with a deft hand, it is a thing of true beauty. The purchase of a brand-new, bespoke 1500L French Oak vessel is a moment of great occasion, and to celebrate, we created a blend of 80% Watervale and 20% Flaxman Valley Riesling to “season” the new barrel. Wild fermented with indigenous yeast from the vineyard, this wine is a symphony of complex flavour and aromas. The sweet spice notes of cinnamon, cardamom and allspice are perfectly complemented by aromas of sweet tropical fruits and coconut cream. The palate is utterly enchanting; exquisitely textured with silky oak tannins, intertwined into the unctuous creamy richness of the mid-palate and woven through and around a taut line of driving acidity. A bewitching wine of grace, opulence and intrigue that will enchant on release and continue to charm over many years in the cellar.

About Rieslingfreak Wines

Rieslingfreak was born from a long-running love for the Riesling variety. Established by John Hughes in 2009, Rieslingfreak started as a passion-project and has grown to a portfolio of 11 different Riesling styles.

Since the beginning, our mission for Rieslingfreak has been to produce quality Rieslings that best represent both style and region. We craft Rieslings that showcase the strength of various South Australian wine regions, including Clare Valley, Eden Valley and Polish Hill River. Our collection has been created with each of the Rieslingfreak wines being assigned a number, and the number represents both the region where the grape is grown, and the style of the Riesling in the bottle.

Our Rieslingfreak collection includes dry, sweet, sparkling, and fortified Riesling styles. There are not many grape varieties in the world that provides a winemaker the same level of versatility that Riesling does.
