This, along with slow, whole bunch pressings, wild ferments and extended lees contact, has resulted in a wine which is defined by remarkable grace and clarity.

Although I would drink 1 bottle of gewürztraminer in 2000 wines, it usually is Rippon. And I should drink more of this wine. It is such a leading light. Nails the savoury, lo-fi, textural, skin fermented, lees raised, complex expression. If not a world benchmark. Every list worth its salt should have this on it. Smells sweet but not bubble gummy and cartoony, more Turkish market spice and rosewater bath in the most refined, evocative sense. Succulent in texture, concentrated flavours but again, a ripple of chalky texture, bright core of mixed-minerally acidity, a chew to finish and this beautiful, lingering, fresh sweetness. Candied almonds, dried citrus peel, green apple, faint nutty characters. Just wonderful. Such an intriguing, beautiful wine, and with so much future potential. Extraordinary.

Home to some of Central Otago’s oldest vines, the family owned and farmed Rippon lies on the shores of Lake Wanaka, just five minutes drive from Wanaka township.

The farm voice of a distinct parcel of land: Rippon. On the western board of Roy’s Bay, Lake Wanaka, Rippon’s north-facing escarpment forms the meeting point of terminal moraines and coarse gravels, all based in schist, on which some of the region’s earliest vines were planted.

Rippon is a Wine issued from all of the fully developed Pinot Noir vines growing in this land.
