Our 2022 Pinot Gris et al is certainly a wine that many customers have grown to love. So whilst we won’t change ‘too much’ we’ll still tinker around the edges making minor adjustments suit the vintage and make our wine even better.

Gewurztraminer is the X factor grape in the 3 way mix, add too much and it dominates. Too little and the wine (and winemaker) goes wanting more. But this year, the blended addition is just right. Not overshadowed nor overpowering, an equal and balanced measure that joins front to back palate, providing amped up aromatics, flavour and complexity too.

Our 2022 Pinot Gris et al consists of 90% Pinot Gris, 7% Gewurztraminer and 3% Chardonnay. All high quality parcels of fruit, hand picked and sorted prior to processing.

Our Gris and Chardonnay which hails from Woori Yallock in the Upper Yarra Valley was 60% destemmed, directly into the press which acted as a fermenter for 5 days. Shutting the press door we allowed a gentle flow of C02 into the head-space until fermentation kicked off. Monitoring and tasting daily, and after a 6 baume drop, we drained the juice and pressed the skins to neutral 225L barriques to continue fermentation to dryness.

The other 40% of Gris and Chardonnay (combined) was gently pressed as whole bunches to barriques and hogsheads for fermentation using wild yeast. Our small parcel of Gewurztraminer came in separately and was pressed as whole bunches, largely tank fermented before racking to barrel to complete primary and secondary ferment.

All barrels remained on gross lees until blending in late July and bottling mid August, 2022.

We opted to fine for protein stability to ensure a haze free result, but did not cold stabilize hence you may see the odd crystalline deposit in the bottom of your bottle which is completely safe and harmless! Our Gris et al is unfiltered and was bottled using only minimal amounts of S02 throughout the winemaking process.

A tad lighter in color than previous vintage, but there’s amped perfume and flavor in this new 2022 vintage wine. Light orange into salmon and super vibrant. There’s Aromatics of cumquat and mandarin citrus, potpourri and an underlying exotic spice. The Chardonnay is lovely but subdued and shows itself in a reserved ‘rock-melony’ way.

The palate is long, textural and flowing. The natural acid is mineral, slightly saline but neither pokey or obvious. The skinsy Gris dominates, but the Gewurztraminer is there, it has a lychee note we notice more on the finish. Plenty of poached pear, apples and dried florals too. There’s a real silkiness here, it’s plush but anchored by ultra fine tannin from skin contact.

About Rouleur Wines

As you’ve probably guessed, cycling also plays a big part in my life!

Growing up on a farm, as a kid the only way to get around was 2 legs or 2 wheels. I chose the latter and this kicked off a life long obsession with all things that roll.

Rouleur was born from hours spent in the saddle, exploring the terrain of my two favourite places – Yarra Valley, where I grew up and later McLaren Vale, where I worked for several years. Rolling around, stopping at grower vineyards, talking to people, hearing their story and sharing mine offered a unique perspective on both wine regions.

I still love cycling, particularly in the Yarra Valley and McLaren Vale. Beautiful places and passionate people, It’s hard not to feel inspired here.

The Rouleur philosophy is pretty simple. We source exceptional parcels of fruit from quality vineyards and growers to make wine that we, and hopefully you, like to drink. We tend to pick on the earlier side, seeking bright acid, freshness and lift without sacrificing flavour. Our aim is to capture terroir by not messing with the natural order too much, keeping winemaker inputs and additions to a minimum. Rouleur wines are handmade in small batches to deliver our take on the varieties and vineyards we work with. A delicious and personal perspective on each vintage year.

For me, Rouleur is the merging of my life’s rolling journey in wine. A tilt of the hat to someone lost but not forgotten and a nod to the road less traveled.
