The Sara Vezza 2018 Barbera d’Alba Superiore Villar’o (a release of about 2,000 bottles) is a smooth and fruit-forward expression with lots of buoyant dark plum, blackberry and summer cherry. There are pretty mineral details and a hint or two of dark spice or rum cake. It could be a nice choice for fatty Chinese spare ribs. This is a mid-weight red with a nice showing of balanced acidity.

Ethereally fine, woodsy fragrance of fir cones and mushrooms and wild strawberries. A wine that tastes just like it smells, although, into this, are pressed tannins that feel like parchment and silk, and spice that is so delicate it’s as if it were henna-brushed onto the ankles and wrists of the wine. Achingly refined. A wine that doesn’t demand anything and yet you find yourself wanting to drop everything to sit at its feet and listen for its heartbeat.

About Sara Vezza

Sara Vezza comes from a long line of farmers in the commune of Monforte d’Alba in Piemonte. Her mother, Josetta Saffirio, decided to stop selling their grapes to other wineries and instead began making wine herself, gaining notoriety in the 1990s for her “vin de garage” Barolo.

Sara shares the responsibility to the land of her forebears, endeavouring to make wines that speak of their origin while leaving the soil in better condition than how she found it. As she says, “Wine is a life force, rich in micro-organisms that allow it to evolve. For this reason it is necessary to work the land with great responsibility towards future generations.”

Fine Wine Cellars

On the one hand, our role as a merchant of all things wine & spirits could not be simpler. We aim to source the most delicious, the most authentic, and the highest quality products possible from Australia and around the world in order to offer them to our clients. We live or die by how well we perform this task. Of course things are rarely as simple or as easy as they seem. Hunting for wines & spirits is no different. Apart from the months spent travelling, countless days and evenings spent tasting and the outrageous wine expenditure in the name of ‘research’, sourcing quality wine and spirits requires expertise and experience. Understanding the potential of a producer and their products is much more than just a slurp and a spit.
