90 points – Erin Larkin
”A blend of Mendoza and Clone 95. Wild fermented in barrel (50% new). There’s a lot going on here. It’s edgy and plump, there is salted peach and apples and plenty of brine. The acid and the oak/tannin have a bit of an awkward intersect at this stage; it’s not quite come together yet, although that’s hardly surprising given it is so young. Give it a year or 2 to sink into itself.”

Zesty lemon and lime curd flavours balanced by a lengthy mineral acidity giving a lengthy and elegant finish.

This Chardonnay is a blend of three different Chardonnay clones; 60% Gingin, 20% Clone 1, 20% Clone 95. Each Clone has a distinctive contribution to the final wine; Gingin gives palate weight and stone fruit characters, Clone 1 gives fresh acidity and minerality and whilst Clone 95 provides texture and citrus flavours. Each Clone were harvested separately and fermented separately.

All fermentation was carried out in 40% New and 60% second year French Oak barriques of which 50% was wild and 50% was inoculated. Each barrel was lees-stirred twice a week until the desired texture and complexity was achieved and then left to further mature until blending. The final blend was then fined with isinglass and stabilised and filtered before bottling.

Consistent rain throughout winter and spring leading up to the 2019 vintage has allowed for even healthy growth. Fruit set was moderate which lead to less than average yields across all varieties. A cool summer gave the vines a long ripening period, as a result our Whites are crisp and vibrant with concentrated flavours and the Reds are elegant and flavoursome with fine tannins.

About Silkwood Estate

The selection process for Establishing Silkwood Estate was based on finding both and ideal climate and soil to produce quality wines.

As early as 1967, Professor Gladstone, a renowned authority on the wine industry, recommended Pemberton as Western Australia’s most suitable wine region. However it was not until 1982 that the first vineyard appeared.

Silkwood was established in 1998. The prevailing temperate climate, gently undulating landscape and the rich gravelly loam soils that overlay the clay base, were all strong deciding features of the selection – quite possibly the same factors that influenced Professor Gladstone’s recommendations.

The vineyard is set amongst magnificent and picturesque Karri and Jarrah forests for which Pemberton is famous.

In 2006 the Bowman family purchased Silkwood Wines and since then the philosophy has always been to produce quality wines first and foremost but why not also create and environment within which to enjoy them.

It was then that the idea to build luxury accommodation on the premises came to fruition and the Silkwood Experience was born. Together with our breathtaking cellar door and restaurant, it is truly an experience to behold.

We are a small team but a passionate one and we are very proud of the widespread acclaim and awards we have won for our wines and to share these with you gives us great pleasure.

Being a boutique winery, we pride ourselves on remaining true to our hearts in producing exceptional quality wine, providing our clients with a truly memorable experience and showcasing the beautiful part of the world that is Pemberton.
