Pete Shell is the gift that keeps on giving. This is the first vintage of Spinifex’s flagship Rostein Riesling, released six years after the vintage. Spinifex’s two-acre Rostein vineyard is home to two parcels of seriously old Riesling, one planted in 1945 and the other in 1957. These parcels produce minuscule yields for Riesling—a paltry 0.8 tonnes per acre is the norm—resulting in wines of atypical concentration and power.

The fruit comes predominantly from the oldest vines (1945, indeed some of Australia’s oldest Riesling vines!), facing east and sitting at almost 500 metres elevation. The dry-grown vines sit on sandy loam over quartz and gravel soils. The fruit was hand-picked in three passes over a week. The wine was then fermented naturally and aged on lees for 11 months in 1,000-litre neutral oak and was even allowed to go through partial malo. It was then bottled unfiltered after 14 months. In other words: this is anything but your garden variety SA Riesling. 2017 was a cool, lean and citrus-forward year for Riesling in the Eden Valley, so Pete decided to hold the wine back for a few years in bottle, allowing the acidities to mellow and integrate and the fruit to flesh and round out.

Spinifex Wines owners and operators, Peter Schell and Magali Gely, have had a home in the Barossa Valley for over twenty years and hold a strong commitment to and passion for the Barossa. They also have a strong French connection, both physically and philosophically.

Magali’s family, who up until recently were vignerons with a long lineage in Lunel, near Montpellier, still live in south France, and over the last ten years Peter has worked six French vintages, in Provence, the Languedoc, Bordeaux and Burgundy.

Wine Making Process at Spinifex Wines

Time spent in the south of France has fuelled their interest in making unique, hand crafted wines with personality, which are generous and honest expressions of the varieties and their provenance.

Spinifex Wines grapes are sourced from a group of dedicated growers in both the Barossa and Eden Valleys, taking advantage of the great diversity of the soils and meso-climates of the Barossa to create wines with balance, character, depth of flavour and Barossan generosity.

Fine Wine Cellars

On the one hand, our role as a merchant of all things wine & spirits could not be simpler. We aim to source the most delicious, the most authentic, and the highest quality products possible from Australia and around the world in order to offer them to our clients. We live or die by how well we perform this task. Of course things are rarely as simple or as easy as they seem. Hunting for wines & spirits is no different. Apart from the months spent travelling, countless days and evenings spent tasting and the outrageous wine expenditure in the name of ‘research’, sourcing quality wine and spirits requires expertise and experience. Understanding the potential of a producer and their products is much more than just a slurp and a spit.
