Indigene is based on Barossa’s wonderful resource of old-vine Shiraz and Mataro (aka Mourvèdre). This year’s blend was sourced exclusively from some of Spinifex’s oldest, dry-grown Shiraz (52%) and Mataro (48%) vineyards located in Ebenezer, Moppa and an elevated site in Eastern Barossa.

The fruit was hand-harvested, cooled overnight and destemmed before naturally fermenting. For the Shiraz component, 30% whole bunches were retained. Natural fermentation took place in small steel and wood fermenters for between 10 and 24 days, then the wine was pressed into a selection of puncheons and demi-muids (40% new) for 20 months prior to bottling—unfined and without filtration.

This has always been Pete Schell’s ode to old-vine Barossa but with his own twist. It’s immediately appealing, with deep and captivating aromas of dark fruits, plenty of florals and spice. The complex palate is richly flavoured and textured. Tight tannins and driving fresh berry acidity complement the potency, fleshy/plump weight and noteworthy length. That said, it is still a pup, with plenty of excitement to come. 2021 is a brilliant rendition of Indigene that fans should not miss.

“Rich, full-blooded red wine served on rails of velvet. This is a seriously creamy wine, its saturated plum and blueberry flavours gliding through the palate before finishing with a juicy flourish. There’s fine-grained tannin and quite high acidity, but the fruit and oak characters here flush straight through both. Mint and clove notes are also part of the show, as is smoked cedar. It’s still finding its feet but the stuffing here is excellent.” 93+ points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front

Description

Spinifex Wines owners and operators, Peter Schell and Magali Gely, have had a home in the Barossa Valley for over twenty years and hold a strong commitment to and passion for the Barossa. They also have a strong French connection, both physically and philosophically.

Magali’s family, who up until recently were vignerons with a long lineage in Lunel, near Montpellier, still live in south France, and over the last ten years Peter has worked six French vintages, in Provence, the Languedoc, Bordeaux and Burgundy.

Wine Making Process at Spinifex Wines

Time spent in the south of France has fuelled their interest in making unique, hand crafted wines with personality, which are generous and honest expressions of the varieties and their provenance.

Spinifex Wines grapes are sourced from a group of dedicated growers in both the Barossa and Eden Valleys, taking advantage of the great diversity of the soils and meso-climates of the Barossa to create wines with balance, character, depth of flavour and Barossan generosity.

Fine Wine Cellars

On the one hand, our role as a merchant of all things wine & spirits could not be simpler. We aim to source the most delicious, the most authentic, and the highest quality products possible from Australia and around the world in order to offer them to our clients. We live or die by how well we perform this task. Of course things are rarely as simple or as easy as they seem. Hunting for wines & spirits is no different. Apart from the months spent travelling, countless days and evenings spent tasting and the outrageous wine expenditure in the name of ‘research’, sourcing quality wine and spirits requires expertise and experience. Understanding the potential of a producer and their products is much more than just a slurp and a spit.
